Drip system not wetting soil

I just installed a drip system for some window boxes. I bought adjustable drippers on stakes that spray in a 180 degree pattern, but later decided to use drip tubing with emitters at 6 inch intervals. The soil gets wet under the emitters, and runs out the bottom of the boxes, but not all of the soil at the top of the planters is wet. I’m thinking I need to redo with my original plan.

Also, I read that containers should be watered several times a day for a few minutes because the potting mix has poor capillary action and the moisture won’t move horizontally through the soil. Is this right? It appears that this might be what is happening. I thought I could give them a good soak every couple of days. This is what the drippers on stakes look like.

It seems that the solution is to put a large amount of water on at once, rather than a slow drip, in order to wet all of the potting mix. Anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks.
