You didn't say if this is your furniture in this room because that furniture is not very farmhouse. It's important to plan out the total room first before you decide what to do with the wall unit.

• You could move it to another room if that works. What is happening in the kitchen?
• You could stain it instead
• Adding art over the mirror will minimize some of that 90s appearance.
• Farmhouse doesn't mean you have to paint it white.

You could convert the center to a bar

You could change out the center and mount a TV

It looks like it is movable. It's not flush with the walls. It's in front of a side mirror or window. Have you tried taking a closer look now that you have moved in?

To answer questions, the furniture is not ours - it was what the listing agent used for staging. There are mirrors on the side walls too which we are planning to take down. You are right that it is not built in - I guess it was custom built to fit this space...but is just a more old fashioned style than what we would like. I appreciate the suggestions and any advice!

if its not you, its not you. i'd not paint it... it will still not be you. do an exploratory as to whether its removable. your dining room will certainly feel larger.... but keep in mind there might be flooring issues to repair.

Don't paint it. Remove the doors. Wallpaper the back of all the shelves in a modern wallpaper. Put interesting dishes and pottery on those shelves. Leave the main mirror. Get a dining table in a similar wood but add very modern chairs. The piece is very functional and has good lines.
