Stair runner-serge or bind?

Stair runner to basement-installing mostly for my sweet labs. Would like to hear opinions on serging vs binding. It seems like old threads recommend each method evenly. Carpet is Milliken Exotic Escape.

I found a picture of the carpet with binding.

Personally I don't like the thickness of it being tucked under and the middle of the stairs shows the wear quicker that way.

Have you considered the fact that you are now going have to vacuum those stair treads with a machine up and down? And, you have multiple dogs?

I am assuming that you have a solid surface on the treads already or you would not be applying carpet to them.

Uncarpeted treads are so much easier to keep clean!

A bound edge looks a lot more finished than a serged edge---my 2 cents worth.

My Karastan runner has a serged edge with a color very slightly different from the color in the carpet. To me it looks fine. I have 3 dogs, one of whom (Ginger) decided to 'model' the runner just as I was taking the pic. The runner gets vacuumed regularly and has never had any thread pulled out in the process.

Vacuuming stair runners is a pain, but so is every other aspect of housekeeping! Love that cutie pie!

And wouldn’t dogs slip on plain wooden stairs? Plus runners make the stairs look much more finished.

Thank you everyone for the information and advice. I’ve never had a stair runner so I appreciate the help. My oldest lab is 12-he is skiddish about the basement stairs and that’s where my kids hang out. I have to make a safe way for him-plus I have 3 kiddos who love to vaccum. Not! But they will for the dog!

When the edges are tucked under, the installer only installs padding between the turned edges to provide a level line to the steps.

You'll need padding under the runner regardless.

After a flood from a 2nd floor broken pipe, the sisal on my stairs was destroyed. Stairs were refinished and looked so nice I didn't put anything on them. It's a VERY narrow staircase, and it's the first thing one sees when one opens the front door.

Now, over 18 years later, my 12 yr old Cavalier, was having trouble with those uncarpeted stairs. She would lose her grip with her hind legs and come down way too fast, ending up in a heap at the bottom. Clearly, not an option. I tried holding her collar and going down one step at a time - it worked but not really a great solution as I need to be careful myself!

So, I ordered seagrass carpet treads, bound in a very dark black/brown twill tape. They have a rubber backing and are to be taped down with carpet tape. I haven't taped them yet as I need to have the painted risers re-painted (cleaning women with vacuum damage). But just the rubber backing is holding them in place in the meantime and they look quite nice. My precious Shimmer, can now once again go down the stairs unaided - helps her going up at night as well.

Can't remember where I ordered them - can't find charge on my AmEx bill. They came as a set of 13 and cost about $150 for the entire set.

It's a great, inexpensive solution that is easy for dogs!
