Need help: remodeling stairs

Remodeling the stairs in this condo. I realize these pictures don't showcase the stairs all that well (they are behind the hideous white and pink structure, behind love seat.) They are too steep. I would like to be able to walk under my stairs (floating/free standing stairs?) but not sure if it is possible. This is a loft style condo. I'll post a better pic asap. HELP! WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?!?!

You may also need to check local construction codes. Where we live, plans are required by the local authority, and (if the plans are Okayed) building inspections must follow. There are safe (and sometimes legally required) dimensions for height of each stair, width of stair back to front, distance between spindles, etc. Whatever else you do, make sure every stair is the same height as the others for safety's sake.

BTW, the chest in the first pic is in front of the other side of the stairs/storage room under stairs. I would like to free up that space and have a more open concept. Again, not sure if it's possible because it may not be connected to a wall the whole way through.

do you have or could you get blueprints of you condo, you may not be able to change them. Some codos have very strict rules about what can and not be changed. Sometimes it has to do with overall structure and or fire codes.

I do not have them but I can ask the HOA. They know I want to remodel, don't think it'll be a problem, but yes I need to review the bylaws!

I think you're gonna need an architect or design/build firm for this one.

Yes, I definitely need a professional. These stairs have been remodeled once before years ago but they did a terrible job. I am worried it will happen again. I know the look that I want (Open concept underneath stairs, wood stairs with a white base and white spindles.) I am going to hire a contractor but know NOTHING about construction of stairs and what my options are for this unit. The landing is very small and there isn't an adjacent wall to the brick wall that goes down to the floor. I'm just so anxious about hiring someone! I wish I could have someone from HGTV come over and show me a virtual version and work wonders!! LOL Thanks for your input, guys!

Just reviewed the bylaws and read nothing of any restrictions of fire codes, etc. not allowing me to remodel.

Thanks for your feedback! As you can tell, I'm new at this. This is my little starter home I just got and it needs so much work! It reeks 70's all over!

Funny you should say that about the 70s. Our area was built in the late 60s and we have renovated extensively (including removing walls and miles of wood panelling, enclosing an open porch etc.). A younger woman moved in close to us and was thrilled with her "mid century modern". She said she felt so lucky that she had found a house where nothing had been changed since it was built. I gulped and decided she had better not see what we have done!
