I'm sorry, I'm confused. Which of these is the "new" cabinets? Are you showing the top two pictures as inspiration?

Can you post a floorplan and also if none of these of these pictures is the new cabinets, can you please post pictures of the cabinets?

Have you made other decisions as well? New appliances? Sink type (stainless, coloured), drop in, undermount, farmouse style? Have you chosen a faucet finish?

Is the flooring changing as well?

Do you have an inspiration picture to show us so we can offer suggestions for how to achieve the look you are after?

    thanks

Shoot! When I posted the pictures went in the wrong order I am still having trouble with this app! The ***FIRST*** picture is my kitchen now. I am taking the cabinets from the bottom two pictures and installing into the kitchen in first photo!!!! I am keeping the stove and refrigerator. The floor will be done in an ebony finish real hardwood. I am sorry!!

@mvcanada brushed nickel faucet under mount sink. Floor change from large tile to color ebony natural hardwood. Interested in granite i just don’t know what color to go for!

Ok, still a little confused...the pictures are showing above, the top two with medium coloured granite...those cabinets are being installed in the kitchen in the bottom photo? Are they kind of cinnamon coloured or is that just the lighting in the photo?

Are you moving anything around, or tearing out walls etc? Does plumbing and electrical need to be re-routed?

Do you like the granite in the kitchen where you've shown two pictures?

What kind of granite have you looked at so far and what are you drawn to? Do you like lighter colours? Lots of veining or "movement"? White backgrounds? Have you looked at products like Caesarstone or other quartz products?

The first thing I notice in the bottom picture which I think you're telling us is the current kitchen is one pitiful little light fixture. You need to get better lighting into that kitchen including more ceiling lights and undercabinet lighting as well.

If you are interested in quartz counters, Caesarstone has a visualizer tool so you can try different colours with cabinets similar to your colours. I'm sure other manufacturers have a similar tool, but it is a good place to start to see what you like and what works well with the cabinet colours.

I happen to love soapstone. Oh my, it is gorgeous to look at and feels wonderful too - I could run my hands over it all day. If it interests you, do some reading as it does require some maintenance but nothing onerous in my opinion. If you are a fan of that look but not up for the real thing, there is a granite called Jet mist that looks very similar to soapstone, and folks seem to like it with a honed (non shiny) finish. There are also quartz products made to look similar.

    @mvcanada

The cabinets are like a maple spice cinnamon I was told. The countertop that is dark in the previous kitchen I do not like. I would rather have a lighter color with more movement! We are installing high hat lighting as well because I hate that stupid little light it does no justice! The cabinets also come with lighting on the top and in the one cabinet with glass windows. I wish I could figure a way to edit my post, I’m such an amateur!!

    Me too, confused.

What is going to happen to the granite counters and backsplash? Those look too nice to rip out.

    @leelee

The cinnamon colored cabinets with the darker granite were my uncles he bought a house and gutted the kitchen, my aunt didn’t want that color cabinet...we took them since the cabinets we had were old and I hated them. The granite they did something with, I didn’t like how it was that dark color. I was thinking of something lighter but I have no sense of design!!!

I can’t figure out how to post pictures in the right order on this damn app. The kitchen with the SUBWAY TILE is the kitchen that is getting redone. New granite, hardwood floor and high hat lighting.

Was thinking something like this color granite??

OK, got it. How about starting by looking at the Caesarstone site and trying the visualizer. I think something like Dreamy Marfil might look nice with those cabinets. Or maybe Statuario Maximus. It looks beige on my monitor but I don't know if it will work with the cabinets you've got.

Maybe Silestone Pulsar would look nice? Or Silestone Eternal Calacatta Gold which has a light background but the veining has gold colours in it. I've read a lot of comments about people liking this one very much.

@mvcanada that Calcutta gold is beautiful!! I like that!! Thanks, I will give that visualizer a try!!

    That Shivaski!!! I loveeeeee!! @mvcanada

Thank you so much!!! I just needed some advice!!! We just bought the appliances with in the last year and a half I am sticking with them just wasn’t sure with countertop and cabinet color what to choose!
Then of course depending on price we may do the same countertop for the backsplash , so much to choose from! You had to see me picking paint colors!! Ugh

Glad I could offer some suggestions. Do your research and read up on Houzz forums about some of these products to hear the pros and cons. There are some excellent pros who post on here regularly and they have a wealth of knowledge on making these choices. It is worth the time and effort to read up and go into it prepared.

Just for some inspiration, here is a wood kitchens idea book with mostly mid-tone wood cabinets - some new, some refreshed:

    https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/75202366/list/wood-kitchens

Mine is the second kitchen - I have a "short apron" apron front sink which can be installed on a standard sink base cabinet incase you like that style.

    OK, got it!

One more thing about the slab is to be sure to take pictures of it and put your initials all over the back of the slab. That way there won't be any confusion. If there's a direction to the granite or whatever you pick then discuss what direction you would like it to run. Don't take it for granted that they know.

Are you going to do any revising of your kitchen floor plan. I don't like how the stove is next to the wall. Maybe swap stove and fridge places.

Have you given any thought to the arched top cabinet doors? They sort of put the cabinets in a different century. Matching the bottom doors would make a huge difference in the look of your new kitchen.

Will floors stay the same? Yours has lots of movement and could spoil the look of even the most beautiful Taj Mahal quartzite.

I'd be so tempted to go with white counters and white tile backsplash to brighten the whole kitchen.

@leelee the floors will be a hardwood that runs throughout my house already

I was thinking of moving the fridge to where the stove is but I’m pretty sure my boyfriend already did the plumbing for the spot where the fridge will be .. we removed the pantry in the old kitchen and are replacing with a dishwasher so the fridge needed to be moved a foot or so. What do you mean by the mid century on the cabinet?? The crown molding? lol I’m sorry for being so stupid
  • 8 years ago
@leelee never mind I see what you mean with the arches on the door I actually just realized that the bottoms are square and the tops are rounded, that is weird! We weren’t really planning on doing this Reno, my uncle bought the house behind us and didn’t want the kitchen and the cabinets were in great shape so we took them. Had I wanted to Reno it myself I would’ve went with a whole new style but the funds aren’t there right now for all of that so just to update it a little we took them!
I can always buy just the cabinet door to match the bottoms right??

Don't stress the doors right now:) The simple arch is still something I see now and then - my own cabinets have them. The cathedral arch of the original cabinets is more of an older look.

I realize your boyfriend has already done some work, but if you are going to be doing all this work, you want a good layout - a good working kitchen. Please try for the dishwasher next to the sink, the range 5' or so from the sink - around the corner as in you uncles kitchen is good. Get a good vent for the range and only do the over the range micro if you must. Your uncle's kitchen has a pretty good layout.

@jhmarie any particular reason for over the range microwave not being good?

A microwave vent combo gives very poor venting. It is also difficult for short people to lift heavy things up, and sometimes results in leaning into a burner that is on - or a blouse falling towards a burner. However, sometimes due to space considerations, that is the only place for it. Tall, young people can deal with it easier than short, older people.

I have a dedicated vent - not overly strong (390CFM), but it is enough to help keep my kitchen much cleaner then without. A stainless hood would also look prettier - and if you haven't given a thought to under cabinet lighting, please do. It was the most functional change I did.

Now is the time to make changes. The stove is the main thing I would really want to move. The water to the fridge can be easily changed. It'll be closer to the sink so shorter line if you put it where the stove is.

Glad to hear you're getting wood floors.

@jhmarie thanks! I’m looking into a hood vs the microwave above the oven. I had one on my previous kitchen. There is lighting above the cabinets and in one of the glass cabinets in the corner. We’re installing recessed lighting as well which will be nice.
