I see nothing wrong with designing a room around a rug. And I like what you have so far.

Your floors are a warm colored wood, and the rug accents that warmth. Your dark furniture provides contrast, but I suggest you choose lighter tables and accessories. For instance, brass and glass tables would pick up the yellow-orange from your rug yet keep the room looking open. Perhaps something like THIS?

Choose a painting for over the sofa and for at least one other wall in the room, and once again pull the main colors from the rug. I don't have pillows as accessories. I have them because I'm short, and they help me sit upright in chairs built for those with longer legs. Nonetheless, my pillows coordinate with my color palette. I suggest you have at least two pillows that work with your rug. The pillows do not have to match each other. While I have made suggestions, the style is up to you. Buy things you love and you will be happy with your room.

I lurve your rug. You certainly can build your room on those colours without looking over-matchy. For one thing, your art can but does not have to pick up on those colours (I've shown both options) -- what it has to do is make you happy and chime with the mood and feeling of the room. I haven't put any throw pillows in here, but Mindshift's advice is good. Don't be afraid of a patterned pillow, although I'd stick with small pattern so as not to compete with the rug. For another thing, green will always help break the over-dominant colour scheme. Plants, even a green throw pillow, or vase or whatever.

Coffee table, I'm not sure. Both these directions could work. The solid wood might be a bit heavy, but I rather like it.

And yes an off-white couch could work, just be careful to get the right off-white. I went for a creamy tone.

Oh and about your other question -- I'd use this rug in your formal room. It's such a lovely show-off. Also, the family room might be better served with darker or medium-toned colours, as it will probably get more foot traffic.

I also love that rug! You can and should decorate a room around a rug, sometimes even a pillow can provide the inspiration for a color palette and style of a room.

But before you jump in, make sure you have a good furniture layout plan so you purchase the proper size rug and furniture pieces.

Also, I wouldn't use dark upholstery or case goods with the rug. It has a light and carefree look, and dark furniture just wouldn't work well.

Love the rug hate that dark furniture with it.I would choose a color from the fringe for the main sofa and then add a couple of chairs in another color fromthe rug so maybe the cream and then a couple of yellow chairs.These colors would work perfectly

I always choose flooring/rug first. Easy breezy to find fabrics, but hot the other way around.

Rug needs a good pad (not a rubber one).

Window treatments and throw pillows….will really change things.

There is a distinct sherbet undertone to the rug. I think soft colors ffor fabrics would look beautiful. This is Thibaut.

I want to clarify that the dark furniture is not mine! It is the seller's. Agree it does not look right. We are starting from scratch so luckily can create the look we want.

I forgot to mention I have a baby, so am slightly concerned about kid friendly (love the cream couch but can I keep it pristine through multiple kids?). though obviously that is more a concern for the family room, rather than the living room. How do people think about this? make the living room mostly "kid free," is that even realistic as they grow older? Any fabrics that are easier to wash or clean?

Just wanted to comment that my cat would LOOOVE those tassels. So keep that in mind if you have a pet. Pretty rug.

If you don't have a stick of furniture what is all the dark sofa + chairs? Is that something you just purchased? Too dark and too matchy. Doesn't compliment the rug. Photoshop?

Look for an ivory (not white or off white) sofa.

Rebecca, a free program that offers much more than MS Paint is PAINT.NET. It started as a computer science student project at Washington State University in 2004. A big difference from MS Paint is that this program has layers which makes many special effects possible. Many features are standard, but there are "Plugins" that you can download and add for more Effects. There are also user created tutorials. Below is a screen shot.

Yep, I used a digital tool to photoshop the rug I purchased onto the existing seller's furniture (just to see how it would fit in the room). The dark furniture is not my furniture. When I move in, it will be gone. Sorry for the confusion!

The brown leather is BORING. Even neutral seating with orange pillows would be a better solution.

Mmmm... I love Beverly’s orange sofa with that beautiful rug! (Great color to hold up to kids & pets). West elm has several sofa styles that come in a great rust or cayenne color... (and they are currently 20% off). I’ve snapped picture of wooden leg styles (because I’m partial to that), but they have other styles, as well.

Instead of matching the dominant color (orange) maybe select a contrasting color?

A purple velvet sofa might look great!

What a great rug! It's a perfect start to a room - and it's so refreshing to see some color. There are some fun ideas above that would work really well. You could do just about anything, but don't think gray would do this rug any favors. Another option is a duck egg blue sofa with camel colored chairs. Both will work well with your rug.

I, too, think this rug belongs in the living room.

Everything but the couch is the actual item (we got a different couch also in a cream color, inspired by many of the responses on this thread!).

The armchair we got in a burnt orange more solid color (they didn't have the jacquard print available anymore). The mid-century modern chairs we got in a teal leather for a bay window corner -- they'll technically be off of the rug on the edge of the room, but we thought the room needed something a cool tone on the opposite end of the color wheel to balance (so it wasn't all orange and matchy-matchy). I wanted purple chairs but hubby vetoed! The table we got matches the chairs (it's called "Stiletto" from Bassett Furniture). We wanted that side of the room to be a sort of tea nook where you can chat with a friend and look out the bay window.

The little leather chair is my favorite. Wanted something small and airy, that wouldn't take up too much visual space. Picked that up from CB2.

I've never decorated a full room like this before, much less with custom furniture that you can't fully see before you order -- so hope it turns out.

Yes, really nice so far. Sadly, Houzz no longer allows me to pick up room images and play with them, or I'd be pasting art and curtains and lamps and things. I suggest you choose your art first, and that is something nobody else can do as you must love it. But suggestions don't hurt, so I think I'd rather fancy a good-sized impressionist work behind the sofa. Modern or traditional. Importantly, what do you like? Find something that makes you think "perfect". Then you draw the colours of further accessories from both the painting and the rug -- there will probably be colours in common if it's "perfect".

That rug is wonderful! Every day, you will walk into that room and smile.

Should have added that if it's to your taste, black and white or monochrome art would also look very good in that room. Then you just look to your gorgeous rug for accessory colours. I would suggest using at least three colours from the rug, and also use the blue in the chairs -- perhaps in a small way: one of the throw pillows on the couch or big chair.

If you're not averse to a bit of whimsy, this would look great on the couch, in company with a few plainer cushions.

Pretty room

Nice base pieces for the room--love the rug! The next item I'd add are curtain panels to frame that beautiful bay window. And some colorful patterned pillows on the sofa and chairs. Pottery Barn has some great selections for a reasonable cost. There's no reason why you can't add a third or even a fourth color, especially in the pillows.

Then a coffee table and perhaps more substantial accent tables. The ones you have look a bit small and since you need table lamps, I'm not sure the tables you have are large enough to hold them.

The last thing I'd do is a wall of framed decorative prints over the sofa. This can take a while to do right, so take your time. Here are a few great articles from Laurel Bern on doing an art wall:
