I wasn't out in it but I heard some reports on the radio of iced over roads, wind, snow and thunder. Parts of the interstate were temporarily closed down because of ice. I'm glad I didn't need to go out.

Oh dear! A robin just flew against the window and knocked himself silly. Startled me out of my wits. I went to the window to see and he hopped just under my car to regain himself. I watched him for about 5 minutes. Two other robins finally went under there with him to help (nice buddies). He seems fine now. I think I was more distressed than he was. (yeah, I live in a Disney movie)

We had strange, dark shades of gray in the late afternoon sky, but east of us, a tornado formed and touched down in Rhode Island. We had rain, but the hail was 25 miles away. The coming Nor'easter forecast was enough to cancel my visitor from Florida this weekend. Hopefully, the temps will stay high enough to keep it all rain - the wind will be enough for me.

Skibby, I was surprised to get up in the night and discover moonlight streaming in the windows. Looked out, the sky was clear and there was a big full moon. This morning - where did the clear sky go? [g].

We barely had anything but darkness yesterday. Around dinner time, we got about 30m of mild thunder and lightening and a few drops of rain.

We had some lightning and thunder, and some rain overnight, but nothing very dramatic. Found a dead goldfinch on the driveway. :o(

We just had normal rain, but my rain gauge says it was 2"! I don't know what happened in the night, but in the morning there was no sign of anythings out of the ordinary for rain. Nothing even close to what you described, NHBabs. What a CRAZY year for weather!

The NOAA weather radio was going crazy with reports of thunderstorms and waterspouts and tornadoes nearby but most of it missed us. There was one period of a few minutes of very very heavy rain and thunder and then it stopped. Close to an inch of rain fell in that short time.

I'm very glad not to have had the hail that NHBabs reported.

I waited all day for the "breaks of sun" predicted for this afternoon which never happened. Maybe tonight we'll get some "breaks of moon". Here's hoping.

I was not a happy camper since I had been in a meeting all afternoon and it was dark with heavy slushy rain in Concord. Not quite hail. I debated route home but decided I would attempt I93. It was clearing by the time I got to Boscawen but I could see hail accumulated on the sides of the road. Weird sky. I missed the double rainbow that a lot of people posted on Facebook. Great shot in Warner from the top of a hill. I don't have my garlic planted yet so there better be some non-windy mild days after this northeaster gets done.

I also need to plant my garlic still and also have a few pperennials left to plant. Maybe there will be time this morning before the storm hits to prep the garlic bed.

I'm confused, I thought garlic was supposed to be planted in July?

And I saw the weather forecast for next week - looks nice just about every day, with no more freezing temps overnight.

I have always planted garlic late fall so it can grow roots but not tops before freeze. I harvest late July.

Ohhhh.... see I just had it backwards. Harvest in July! :-)

I was able to get my garlic in last Sunday. Cool and very blustery - not my favorite weather to work outside but I'm glad I did since it's been miserable ever since. Snow flurries today changing back and forth from rain/sleet. Advisory out for my county until tonight. Happily ignorant I ran errands today and didn't find it tough going. The biggest hindrance was I couldn't find my snowbrush. So I used DH's gloves! Serves him right for hiding the brush. So I'm all set up and snugs with a stack of Library books and groceries.

I should have ordered some garlic bulbs - I find I have an interest in growing the variety 'Music', but I see it's late now and they are sold out with organic growers. Oh well, next year I guess.

It's a little blustery here, in gusts, but entirely uneventful really. It doesn't seem like we are getting all that much rain either. Especially not the downpours forecast. Managed to get to the farmer's market early this morning, soon they'll be no more purple Kale, pretty sweet potatoes and shiny white onions.

Prairiemoon - you can buy garlic at your farmer's mkt or local co-op. Maybe not 'Music' but some other nice hard neck. Anything not treated with an inhibitor (not the right term?) will grow fine. There's still time to get it in. And just to be chatty, if you enjoy sweet potatoes, you might like Sunshine squash (kabocha) if you haven't tried it before. It's new to me and by far my favorite squash.

Skibby - I didn't think of that - of course I can! Some nice organic garlic will do fine and no waiting for a delivery. Kabocha squash is our new favorite. I used to be a big fan of Butternut squash, but now we choose Kabocha every time. We love it too! We tried it for the first time just last year. I noticed our favorite organic farm stand only offers butternut squash, I'm going to have to suggest they try growing the Kabocha. Thanks for the reminder. :-)

Kabocha has edible skin? Very happy to know that as peeling squash is one chore I absolutely dread. You've made my day - thanks Defrost!

skibby, Delicata has edible skin, too, for those recipes where you cut in pretty rings. But, I microwave winter squash maybe 5 minutes, let cool. The skin has softened enough for me to easily peel. Also to cut in wedges so I can peel with a paring knife.
