I guess it would depend on your budget for the remodel. If it were me, I would gut and re-layout the whole thing and move the sink and dishwasher. Change that peninsula to a more rectangular shape or remove and replace with an island. If that beam in the middle is not structural, I would pull that too. Maybe add a beam so it can be removed??? I guess I don't understand the weird counter top on the right side? If you cannot gut, than I would definitely move the sink and dishwasher there to get rid of that weird dip.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The house is so odd. When you say rectangle, would you have it going parallel to the counter tops? Thank you for the suggestion. It's driving me crazy!

At a minimum, can you straighten the sink and reposition the dishwasher so that they fit nicely into a rectangular island and thus eliminate the strange multi-angled top to your island

That's a great idea! I need a new sink and dishwasher anyway, so straightening it out should be no problem. Would you still leave the ability to put chairs around it?

I would do a rectangle peninsula if you cannot do an island, but I would do the island perpendicular to the countertops if you could move that column.

I would leave room for seating with an overhang for the peninsula or island. Just from the photos, you don't really have a lot of room for a big dining table without making it awkward to walk around. In my dream world of unlimited funds, I would actually blow that wall out and make it truly open concept.

Those are such great ideas, thank you. I am going to have the contractor quote it out, just to see if it's doable. If I can't do anything about that awful beam is there anything I can do to make it more appealing?

If you're close to any Metro area there are shops that specialize in Mid Century Modern furniture, china, etc., send them a photo. Ask if they're interested OR do they know who sells period "fixtures" (sinks, toilets, etc.). Then there's Craig's List.
