I would start by researching the different types of countertops - granite, quartz, solid surface, etc. All have pros and cons and only you can decide what you can live with.

I live in the Midwest where granite is still pretty popular but quartz is not far behind. You also have to take account the style of your home and what's common for your area. Your budget may dictate your choice (and for many people, is one of the biggest factors in the types of countertops chosen). There was a granite I absolutely loved but it was almost double the price of any other counter I looked at and could not justify the cost.

It took me 5 months to pick out my countertop and while I like it, I had to work with my existing cabinets so there were choices I liked better but couldn't go with. Take your time, see if you can order samples online to see them in your lighting as I found that samples look very different that pictures online.

Take a deep breath and don't stress yourself out.

Karin - Post as-is pictures of your kitchen, including flooring, in different lighting, and you should get some good input. If you don't have this, post a sample board and/or pictures of all the elements you have put together, and then solicit input.

Your budget and your personal likes guide well, time to eliminate the options that just clutter your mind.

Definitely, budget is a factor. But also, you said the counter is “the last piece”. That means that what you’ve chosen already for floors, cabinets and backsplash will strongly affect your counter decision. Some people choose the counter first, so that for them, the counter’s appearance will affect their floor choice and backsplash choice. Please give us photos of the choices you’ve already made for floors, counters, and backsplash, ant that will enable us to give you guidance on counter choices. Without that, we can’t really help you pick something.

Cabinets are staying (husband nixed painting), floors are done, appliances are brand new, only thing left is countertop and backsplash (which will be picked based off of countertop color)

I would consider something very dark, like leathered Virginia Mist or Via Lactea. I like real stone as opposed to quartz. I think a black countertop will be a nice balance to the lighter colors.

Since you say it’s the last thing does that mean you started the remodel by installing the flooring and buying appliances? Did you have a vision in mind when you started? I would choose something light, similar to what you have now.

You have an adorable kitchen. I think dark or light counter would work. What do you like? What colors did you want to do? I prefer marble with the warmth of your kitchen cabinets but Black could be elegant too. Black would go with your light fixture.
