We are trying to figure out what to do with the stairway wall colour leading down into our basement. You can see the stairs as soon as you walk in the front door and currently, the stairway walls match the colour on the main floor.

I wanted to paint the whole basement including the stairway walls a lighter shade of grey than what is on our main floor but my husband thinks that will look weird because you can see the stairway wall when you walk in the front door.

As well, my husband thinks our stairs (which are a light brown oak colour) clash with the tile floor we just put in (I disagree). We are changing out the carpet to a light grey to match the new tile but any ideas on what we could do with the banister and railing colour? I suggested painting out the banisters white but think we should then paint the banisters going upstairs to our second floor white as well to keep consistent.

Help us out with this disagreement! Should we (1) Keep the stairway walls the same colour as the main floor? and (2) Paint the banisters/railing going down into the basement?
