I now have an "annex"

When we built my GH almost two years ago we allowed for space for my tropicals for our 2-3 cold months because most of them get unhappy below 50 degrees. But they grew even better than I expected and the alloted space is no longer adequate. So yesterday and today we built an "annex"! It's 7'x 4. Big enough to house my duranta after it got a major haircut), my bat plant that's 3' across plus some other smaller plants. We put a light bar in it because it's in the garage and a small heater to keep the temp up.

Deb, the white pot in the front is the only 2 purple daturas that sprouted from your seeds and I didn't want to take a chance to lose them next week when our nights will go down to low to mid 30s.

Glenn, it was a relatively inexpensive project as long as you have good tools or know someone who does. Hubs and I have done some house rehab and flip in the past so he has all the tools.

We built it in the garage to avoid making it sturdy enough for outdoors and to benefit from the residual heat build-up in the garage from the sun. That will keep the electric cost down because the heater won't run much. Cost to run the lights is neglidgeable.

And because it didn't need to be outdoor-sturdy we made it out 2x2s. We bought 2x4x8s and split them on the table saw. Cheaper than buying 2x2s.

We spent under $40 for the whole thing. We already had the 6mil plastic, and screws, staples, hinges and fluorescent light bar. And we made the door the full 7' height and 4' wide to accomodate the duranta which is almost 4' wide and 6' wide even after its fall haircut.

I'm so happy for you! I was not aware the temps were going that low next week. Guess I'll have to bring the plants back in. This gets so old. I may just give them all away./

Deb here are my upcoming temps…unless they change. And I elevated the datura pot because it wasn't getting enough light on the floor.

I have a low of 39 on Tuesday and 33 on Wednesday, so you're a bit colder than I am. This weather is determined to kill my brug blooms! One plant has four blooms just about ready to open, and the other just had its one lone bloom open. They haven't bloomed all year, so I was so happy about that!

Unless it dips below freezing, I'm not going to bring in anything but the baby brugs and tropicals, and cover some other stuff. Of course, I have a LOT of tropicals! I need a freaking greenhouse, but where would I put it? First world problems.
