How long ago did you plant it? At least a few should have sprouted after a few weeks.

None of mine has sprouted yet either this year. Last year every variety made a showing before winter, but most years my hardnecks don't show up until spring.

Thanks it was planted 10/28/18 - the earliest yet and it always sprouted before. Ground is not frozen. I figured it was ok but wanted to check. I did find a clove I missed that had a root and stem starting so stuff in ground is likely ok.

It is always neat to see next years garden popping up now!

Glad I run into this thread. I planted garlic and shallots over a month ago on top of straw bale and they have not sprouted yet, except for one or two shallots. I used straws as mulch and put steer manures/ potting soil on top, dug a hole and planted garlic and shallots. The weather is warm here for winter with only occasional nights that dipped into freezing temperatures so I‘d figure they would sprout. We’ll see how they go by next spring.

My softnecks (Early Italian Red) have a tiny hint of sprouting.

Not a peep, figuratively, from the hardneck (Vietnamese). Planted around 11/10.

I planted my garlic in mid September this year and it grew to about 4 inches before it got too cold to grow. I spread 6 inches of leaves on top. I have experimented plantings in August, September, and October with about the same results as this year.

I deliberately time planting mine so that it doesn’t sprout. Here is northern New England if it sprouted, it would have used stored energy on growing leaves that then were killed back by cold weather. I imagine that this is less of an issue in warmer zones. So my goal is always to plant and mulch early enough so that roots can grow but the top growth doesn’t reach out of the ground where it can be killed.

What I want in the fall is roots. That can be with or without tops, a small amount of which makes no difference IMO.

I am happy to report that less than a month after I planted garlic, I accidentally pulled one of them up (I was clearing weeds) and the bulb has gotten bigger & round (As opposed to original half-moon shape clove). This is exciting just to show more exciting progress to come by spring.
