9’2”x8’10” Den as guest bedroom?

I’ve recently fallen in love with a 1/1.5 apartment with a den. My boyfriend is from another state and wanted to have a guest bedroom option for family in case they ever visit. I have a queen bed and wanted to know if I got creative (used floating shelves and mounted a tv) if this could work.

Yes, for sure it can work. A queen size bed is going to be tight but you should still have room for a few things other than the bed, depending on the floor plan and window and door openings.

I have a guest bedroom approximately that size. In order for the door to swing we didn't have room for bedside tables on either side of the bed. Instead we mounted a floating display shelf that is the 60" wide (same width as queen bed) and clamped lights to it. That way if someone wants to lay in bed or sit up and read, there is light for them to do so. Also small pieces like watches or jewelry, cell phones can sit on the shelf. Another thing to consider is an outlet where phones etc can be plugged in to charge. Even if it means running a power bar out from behind the bed, it is very nice when you are travelling to be able to plug in and still have your phone nearby if you use it as an alarm clock as well.

If you have room some wall hooks, that is also nice, people can hang their clothes since the den may not have a closet.

These hooks from Ikea are perfect. They fold up flat to the wall when not in use and are unobtrusive. Then when you need it, fold it down and it is deep enough that a few things can hang on it, or even a couple of hangers could go on the same hook. Put 3 or 4 in a row spaced evenly and they are great.

A queen size bed in that room will be ridiculous. I have a guest room that is just about 9x12. When my late husband was ill, I had our queen size bed brought downstairs and put in this room. Horrid!!! We both hated it - hard to even get in and out of bed and no room for anything else in the room other than VERY small bedside tables.

Whether or not the den will work as a guest bedroom depends a lot on the position of doors and windows, the amount of privacy available, the personalities of your expected guests...

To be honest, although it's nice to have room for guests if you've found a great apartment that you love and can afford, take it. You need to live in your home 24/7. Guests who really, really want to see you will be satisfied with a sofa sleeper or a hotel. Jmo.

There are VERY good sleeper sofas out there now. I'd try to find one of those.

It can work especially since it is a guest room. No need for closets or dressers. But do you really want to use that space for a room that would be used by guests occasionally or would it function better as an office, craft, tv whatever room that you could use every day? Even as a storage room or closet. Having a queen bed in the room would stop it from being used as anything but a bedroom since it would take up most of the room. Maybe look into Murphy beds, futons or sofa sleepers to make the room more useful.

Here are a couple of furniture layouts in a room with your measurements. I did not know where the door, closet or windows were so those will change the placement of furn but this might give you an idea of how much space you have. 1st with queen bed that barely fits

I have seen a photo of a very very small den that had a queen sleeper sofa as the drawing above, and they made the desk/table so it could fold down when guests came. It also had tall narrow bookcases built in next to the sofa with the top halves half as deep as the bottom to create end tables. It looked amazing! And a wonderful room you can use all the time as well as just for guests.
I think it was in the House Beautiful Small Spaces book.

Sorry, but that is a poor use for the space that you live in 24/7 so on the off chance that your bf's parents ever want to visit they'd sort of have a room. They need to stay in a hotel nearby. You need to make that clear up front. Believe me, everyone will be more comfortable. It has nothing to do with how nice they are or how much you like them.
