Outdated Bedroom/Pine furniture

last modified: 7 years ago

HI! How can I look up pictures/advice/discussions regarding updating a bedroom with pine furniture? I don't want to paint the furniture because I would like to change it at some point and don't want to go through the trouble but I'm thinking of painting room, changing bedding/drapes/lamps/mirror/furniture hardware. Also thinking I will put the armoire in another room and take a piece of furniture from another room not in use.

I think simply changing the knobs could have a big impact .... I dunno, do you want to go industrial or rustic, vintage or ethnic? Lots of choices in hardware these days! You could do pulls instead of knobs - would have to put wood fill in the holes and paint carefully in a matching wood tone to conceal.

Pick out new bedding first. That will help you determine your new wall colour and help with a direction.(so will saving pics of rooms you like) Paint and new bedding will make a world of difference! As will replacing the mirror and the armoire. Then you can decide if you want to change the lamps or just the shades. I would also consider a rug but then I live in the frozen north;) ps-I'm with you. Filling and painting all that would be more than I would want to do,too.

    Replace the headboard first.

Then remove the mirror from the dresser and add art instead.

Doing those things would really update your bedroom with not too much cost.

Beautiful furniture. Solid wood will never go out of style.

If you want to update the room, consider somewhat larger, straight sided lamp shades. You could also change your drapes and bedspread. Repainting the walls is another update option.

Unless there are hardware or other damage problems preventing doors/drawers from working properly, do keep the pine furniture.

What you don't want is a set of bedroom or living room or any furniture with everything all the same. It may be great furniture but it isn't interesting.

Suezbell is right about the lamps.

I agree with above - changing out the knobs will make a huge difference. If you are more eclectic or farmhouse - Hobby Lobby has some unique options. More substancial drapes and a lighter wall color would change things up. Look for a small accent table or cabinet in a different style to change things up. Craigslist or FB Marketplace always has stuff like that.

Your pine furniture is fine. However, your wall color doesn't harmonize at all with your honey hued furniture or the floors. You need warm, creamy white walls , or possibly a very pale sage or teal. Bedding can be ivory as below or a pattern that has sage or teal and and bit of that golden color if you want a pattern. Repainting the walls will change the whole room. These bedrooms have the honey wood finish as your pine:

This quilt is on sale right now at Garnet Hill and would go beautifully with your pine furnishings and walls painted in the same background ivory as the quilt or a pale teal pulled from the print.

I don't think that it is the wood that the furniture is made from that gives an outdated look. I think it is the rounded, curvy ornate style that speaks so much of some past decade.

In my estimation, decor that is devoid of ornate details is the most timeless. A basic piece can always be dressed with a different finishing, but that shape stays the same.

You can reduce the overly ornate feel by removing the mirror over the dresser. You probably cannot remove the headboard, but it would also take away some of that feel.

The rest of your room is nice. It is that curvy ornate shape that locks you into the last century, somewhere. It looks like it may have been, at one time ,graced with the colors of the southwest in a bogus 'navajo" pattern, or maybe a little later in the century.

Other than a couple of minor changes such as some new lamps or so, I would suggest that you come to terms that it is what it is. Your room is nice and your bed coverings are very pretty. The walls, trim and the floor are all nice. You simply cannot erase the imprint of that past decade from the shape of the furniture. That is where it is the most evident, in the shape of the furniture. But, it is all nice.

Your pine furniture is lovely, especially your armoire. Solid and hardworking, I'm sure. I wouldn't be in a rush to change it. (The headboard, yes.) I agree with the others: the wall colour could be lightened up to great effect. Can the armoire and dresser switch places? Sometimes moving furniture around gives the room a different vibe.

Pine furniture was very popular in my neck of the woods a few years back and I'm trying to remember how people would style their rooms. Elegantly spare. Lots of white. Reds too. Navy? I've not found pictures yet of what I remember.

You have a lovely room. I hope you'll post pics of any changes.

Here are some pictures of rooms I found with pine furniture. Just to give you colour palette ideas.

Yellow, grey and blue. The pine is quite warm here but they've added grey and it doesn't clash (to me, on my monitor).

    White and aqua:

Darker stain wood with whites and browns. Touches of green.

Rustic look in an inn. Blue/grey and stone. White walls.

    Grey, white and black:

Pine floor. Velvet bedskirt adds nice texture.

    Grey, white and black.

    Hope this helps!

Is it weird that I’m liking it with the grey??

No. If it appeals to you, it appeals to you. I like it with the grey as well. Not sure if this is a mix of warm and cool colours but to my eye, they look good together.

ETA: If I were you and I was sure I was going to change the wall colour at some point but not sure of the colour, I'd start by priming the walls ASAP. I'm convinced once the walls are lighter, the room will be transformed and you'll have a clearer direction for the room.

The headboard could be padded out with foam and fiberfill then wrapped with fabric to coordinate or match the bedding. It would not have to be attached to the headboard so would not harm it.
