If you do not have under cabinet lighting, consider getting it - it can really help brighten a space. That is my expensive part of the advice. I would change the window treatment. That will be taste specific. I have a more cottage style kitchen and have a faux roman shade in a cottage style fabric - but your style may be very different:

I do not dislike your wall paint, but I personally would go with more of a cream which would work a little better with the backsplash and warm wood tones or sage is another possibility if you like more color. Your appliances look new so you will want to keep them, but I am short and have difficulty with the microwave over the range. long term you may want to consider replacing with a stainless vent - a tad more stylish but not a big deal especially if the hight and venting of the over the range micro does not bother you. Do not forget to add some wall decor - again very taste specific. I have florals and botanicals. You may like something else.

Jhmarie, thank you! I really like the look of traditional/modern farm. Interesting that you say sage color kitchen, originally this kitchen did have slate color but we painted it beige/gray (it looks darker in the pic then it is in real life). Sage did look pretty though!

What do you think of the table? It's bothering me but I can't find a replacement or ideas of what would look better.

I love the look of roman shades- I'll look for roman shades now :-) I'm lost on what to put on the sliding door window however.

I completely agree about the microwave- wish we could get rid of it and replace with the vent. That WOULD look super.

Love your floor. I am not a pro, but I have a window in my kitchen similar to yours. I have had a boring, bland colored Roman shade on my window for a long time, but I am going to replace it soon with a bamboo shade. You don't say how much seating you need at your table, but I think the room might look more finished with a larger table and chairs. I would also consider putting some art work on the wall next to the door wall. Good luck!

wide slat blinds or roman shade in pretty print. i would not do bamboo or wood look, blends into cabs... you need to make a distinction between cabs and shade...

Here is a pic showing the wall. The kitchen is not that wide, the refrigerator is to the right past that door (thats the pantry). And then there is garage door around the corner too next to the refrigerator.

The table or whatever in the kitchen is mostly for aesthetic reasons, we don't gather in the kitchen much to eat. If we host, it's done in the formal dining room.

I agree with most everything said. Take down the valances, add a colorful rug at the sink area. Get end panels for the two white cabinet ends. Paint the chairs cream, and add a round rug under the table. If you don’t have daylight bulbs in all the fixtures, change those. I think it’s a basically nice space! I can’t tell if you’d have room for a small cream colored mobile island, but if so, that would help break the slate up, too.

We don't see too many things that need to be done. We think one of the bigger things is getting panels for the top and bottom cabinets. Under cabinet lighting would be a great addition, and changing the window treatment would be nice. We can't see your overhead lighting to help with that, but if it is florescent, we recommend changing that out as well. Otherwise, it looks like you need a bigger table.

If you don’t use the table, take it out. I like the thought of a comfy chair in the kitchen to sit in while you are waiting for the cookies to be done. :)

I agree also with previous suggestions regarding window treatments and end panels of cabinets. You mentioned the sage green looked pretty, so maybe you could bring that colour back in window treatments. The photo I found here on houzz shows blinds in a pattern and solid panels on patio door. I think this would work well as some pattern would help cozy it up. I’m not suggesting these exact window treatments, but showing you how the work together. You don’t seem to have space above patio doors, so not sure of what kind of curtain rod to use, but I’m sure there’s one.

The table is small, but since you don’t use it for meals, I wonder if replacing just the chairs with some upholstered ones, like smaller wingbacks and then adding a rug. That would seem to suggest it’s an area for coffee, reading morning paper etc.

why are your panels on the ends of your cabinets white? were they wood and you painted them?

I agree w/losing those white curtains. they do nothing for the kitchen and block your light. do you have to have window coverings? If yes, then try something like these

I have similar slate floors and find that the neutral color jute rug w/black borders look very nice. find a size that will fit in front of the sink/stove area. maybe a 3x4 or 2x4?

The chandelier is hung too high over your little table. lower it, or find a better replacement.

look on craigslist if you're really on a budget.

they sell dining table lights all the time for cheap. and don't forget, you can always change the color w/a metallic spray paint.

look for a new little table while you're on there. that one is far too small for the spot, even if you don't use it. It looks 'off'.

I will be the dissenting poster. I like the small table. It means you use & enjoy your dining room. If the view is nice I would probably angle the chairs so both have a view. I would spend the money on cab ends.

We love all the suggestions you're getting above! Have you thought about knocking out the uppers and adding some floating shelves? Seems like that's the latest farmhouse kitchen trend!
