Without measurements it’s hard to tell for sure, but I don’t think you have enough space between the sectional and the stairs. I’d look for smaller scaled furniture.

Those before & after pics are great, Irene. JM, I do think you have enough space to do what you want -- just be careful with furniture size, and perhaps consider not too giant a screen for the TV. I think it's a really nice room.

Stacked stone is already dated and the last place you want a TV is mounted above a fireplace why not check Besta at Ikea for a great way to incorpoarate, TV at the right height , some storage and some display you could proably even design it with a linear fireplace on one side.Something like this with the electric fireplace to the sidewhere the bottom red box is . As for furniture a smaller scaled sofa and 2 chirs will give you flexability and not completly overwhelm the space You will need some sort of coat and shoe storage on the wall to the right of the door.

Here is my suggested layout for your room. I think it might be better if you considered a sectional with built in recliners instead of a fixed chaise attached to the sectional. This will allow you to get back space when needed. Nesting coffee tables will allow you to slide the tables around as required and next when the top space is not required.

Be careful not to overload your room with oversized furnishings. Don't forget you still need to add lighting and accent tables to make sure your room functions for all the different activities that take place in the room.

A swivel barrel chair will provide additional seating for the room. A console table/ cabinet with mirror and buffet lamps above will designate your foyer area. An 8x10 area rug should work under the sectional centered on the TV and fireplace if you decide to add one. Will your FP be electric or gas? Do you have a method to vent the unit if required?

I would do as the other houzzers have mentioned and position your sofa/sectional's back so it creates separation. Then add a console to that back wall. Beings it may be a tight fit I would look for a very slim, or wall-mounted console. You could hang a mirror, or artwork above the console and flank it with wall sconces.I would suggest sconces over lamps as its a smaller passageway.

It should be easy enough to create an entry just by placing the sofa in the correct place. If you are wanting a sectional, the drawing you have posted should be able to work. Just make sure you measure the furniture and space well before purchasing anything. Here are some furniture and design ideas for you as well:

I didn't see any room measurements, but my first impression is that you don't have room for a sectional. Sectionals can be very limiting and very large. Also, IMO anyway, they can seem very casual. This room seems like more formal furniture would fit better.

hubby is totally against the sofa facing that wall he insists on having it face the stairs and mount the tv (65 in) on the small wall, which eliminates an entry way all together. I'm trying to convince him otherwise. I'm also looking for modular sectionals that can be versatile enough if we ever want to change layouts.

Wont you get window glare if the TV is on that small wall ?

I lived in a house that had no closet at the front or back door. It was a huge pain (we live in Canada so it’s a must) to find a place to put the coats on our way in.

If you have to walk by the TV to answer the door it will become an inconvenience.
I get where he is coming from...the tv is smaller than he wants the couch to be so it makes sense from a placement perspective to put the couch or sectional against the long wall and window and tv on the short wall. However, the flow of traffic will always be in front of the tv and any movement up and down the stairs will distract from the show, game or movie.

To make the tv a centre piece, I suggest that turning the room the way you suggested will meet his needs better.

If you have a back door with closet that gets used by the family then hooks on the wall suggested in an earlier picture would be fine with a spot for shoes. A table behind the sectional or couch can be used for snack bowls. Certainly a sectional can maximize seating no matter what size it. And if you are hosting people and the tv is on, kitchen chairs behind the sectional will add seating and can be moved back to the kitchen after.
