Foyer - Tile or Hardwood?

In the process of a remodel and was wondering if tile or hardwood would be better? This would be our primary entry, also it's an open scheme and I have hardwood running throughout the house except the kitchen/bathroom. But the foyer is broken up by a step as you can see in the picture to the living/dining room area and kitchen to the far back, otherwise I would of went hardwood throughout to have a continuous look.

What is the climate in your area? If you experience snow or rain regularly, I would advise against hardwood in the entry.

Climate and integrity of the materials would be the first things I would think of. But flooring can always be protected with entry carpets or runners. I personally live in Oregon, and hate our slate front entry floors because of the grout. Very challenging to keep clean with dogs and the environment, even when shoes come off. A non textured wood floor would also be challenging though. If your wood has scraping or wire brushed texture I bet you’d be ok as long as you use entry mats and/or runners.

For grouting entryways, use a grout with quartz that is nonstainable like Mapei Flexcolor CQ.
