Fireplace advice

Gettng ready to renovate the 'other' side of our two sided fireplace. We have completed one side, using tiled stacked stone, white wood trim and wood mantle. The trim ties into our dining room. We took out the old tiled hearth and replaced it with wood as it is a smaller room (excuse the mess)

On the 'other' side, it has very high ceilings but we are planing to do the same as regards the stone, wood trim, etc. My dilemma is regards the hearth as we have to replace the tile.

I am leaning towards slate as I like the look and want to tie into the dark floors. This hearth will either be flush with the floor or slightly raised depending on what we choose.

1. Do we use a solid slate slab or slate tiles with 1/8" grout. My inclination is the solid slate slab, which will be slightly raised.

2. No matter what we choose, how far out should the hearth extend - i. to the edge of the wall, ii to the inside edge of the white trim or iii to the outside edge of the tile/brick
