solution for ugly kitchen tile

Okay .... unable to redo our kitchen at this point but cannot stand this ugly 70s ceramic tile! Have some upcoming parties and want to make the space look as nice as I can (including rest of house)... any quick fix ideas please Thought about vinyl peel and stick but don’t know if it works atop ceramic?

There's no hiding it that wouldn't make eventual demolition worse.

It looks dirty. Clean it up and just let it go. Its in good shape so....theres that!

Have it professionally cleaned. Pros have equipment, expertise and chemicals.

Google "professional tile cleaning before and after" to see what can be done- it's amazing. You can also apply grout paint that matches the cleaned-up off white tile color.

Peel and stick tiles will show the pattern right through. Save up for a new floor of your choice.

Looks to be in decent condition. Scrub it really well. It will be fine. Only thing important for a house to look nicer is for everything to be super clean, and well organized.

Pinterest shows tile painted and polyurathaned. You could paint amd poly just the pink bits to black or beige until you make a more permanent decision.

I would scrub it up and paint the pink diamonds for a quick face lift. Maybe black? or a deep teal color? Put down some really inexpensive runners. (Scuff the diamonds up with some sandpaper before painting.)

And start putting money in a New Kitchen Floor Kitty.

I like the tiles, in standard pattern, But I wear peaches and salmons alot. If almond / beige tile, not sure black would do it - esp. if grout is brown. I agree that a pro knows how to clean it like it sparkles...

Does anyone have ideas on how to clean the grout/and maybe even regrout in a different color

Clean it well and change the color of the grout. I just used vinegar water. I used Grout Renew on my hall and master bath tile several years ago and it still looks good. I got mine at Home Depot.

Possible if not much pattern, etc... already there. I suppose you could have a couple gold items.

Yes, put down a big (cheap) but fun looking carpet

My sister put down a beautiful Dash and Albert carpet in her kitchen over her ugly tiles and it looks great

Professional cleaning, then recolor the grout a lighter color - you can buy the grout stain/paint at any home improvement store. Its easy to do and will make a world of difference.

I actually don't think it looks that bad, but then I grew up in the 1970s. :)

If it bothers you that much, add some nice throw rugs. I wouldn't try to carpet the entire kitchen, mostly because IME kitchen carpet has some kind of built-in food magnet that makes eggs and open-face sandwiches jump right off the counter.

The field tile looks white or almost white on my monitor. If so, then painting the pink tiles black/ charcoal should look good. Black & white basketweave, etc. tiles are trendy now so it would give it a more up-to-date look. But I wouldn't invest much in it because (A) OP hates it and (B) white tile is a pain in the patooty. Five minutes after you clean it, it looks like it needs doing all over again. Jazz it up a bit, get some cheap runners for the party season and plan to replace it as soon as possible.

ETA: you could cut some little squares of black construction paper and stick them down w/ a glue stick for a preview of how it might look.

No, peel & stick tiles won't work. Rigid core vinyl planks, yes. But then there would be a height transition to deal with. Better to tear it out & do a proper job of it.

If cleaning yourself, get an electric or battery operated tool for the grout. Goes pretty quickly. Squirt with a solution of water, few drops of dawn and some vinegar. Having painted grout in the past, I don’t recommend it unless new products are on the market in the last ten years. I second the idea of painting the pink tiles.

Any suggestions on how to paint the pink tiles??

I would scuff them up real good with sandpaper and paint with PPG's Breakthrough paint. Dries in the blink of an eye, recoat in 2 hours, you will be able to walk on it same day and cures in about a week.

I used it on my basement laundry room floor (painted it this late summer). I had one patch of paint (the size of the foot on my washing machine) pull up but that's because I moved the washer in on the same day that I painted. (Three weeks worth of laundry was piled up.) The washer has been moved in & out a couple of times since with no harm to the paint.

The dealer where I bought it said that they've sold it to the paper mills to use on the floors that have fork lift traffic on them.

Worth a go at painting the accent tiles, use blue painters tape for masking and nice straight lines.
