Need kitchen lighting advice

I can seem to figure out what sort of lighting I should install in this part of my kitchen. Currently, all I have is the ceiling light you see pictured here. Any suggestions as to what I should swap it out for? I wasn't sure if pendant lighting would work because I just have a non-stationary kitchen cart there. Help!

I would go to a Lighting store and see what is available..since your cart moves about at this point, I would consider one of the new directional track lighting that can be hung horizontally to direct lighting to the needed work zones... Such as the ones that I've seen Sarah Richardson and Candice Olson, both designers on the HGTV network, whose designs are functional and beautiful.

You have quite a high ceiling. and so I would go for a hanging fixture, but keep it above head height. You're right, with a rolling cart, you don't want to hit your head on the light fixtures!

Love your kitchen! You should have an island that's permanent! Pendant lighting or an chandelier would look great!

Track lighting would be my choice- you could also go with some recessed lights.

Is the fixture shown the only lighting for the kitchen (aside from the under-cabinet lights? How often is the mobile island moved? Can you post a photo of the chandelier you mentioned?

Definitely a hanging chandelier or pendant. You have the room and would bring in more visual interest and bring the lighting closer to your work space.

Here is what the other side of the kitchen looks like. The only lighting in the kitchen is this chandelier and the ceiling light over the mobile island (we dont even have under cabinet lights). We don't ever move the mobile island.

Maybe something like this might be an option for you. There are quite a few different configurations, although a single light would be much too small for the space but a 3 light cluster might be a nice touch and still being able to use the single junction box.

I like the idea of track lighting using an elated s shaped track with either cone shaped lights that can be oriented in all directions or pendants that hang down just a little.
