Please help!!! what's wrong with room

We just got this couch, coffee table and rug. I love the couch so that's staying. But this doesn't look right it looks horrible. Is the rug too small, coffee table too small? Help please so I know what to return.

I think the coffee table is a bit too small, and if you're planning on adding side tables next to the sofa, then the rug is too small as well.

Window treatments of some sort, accessories, art, lighting other than the harsh ceiling light.

Ok sorry we just moved in. Just putting this room together :)

The walls will be painted a warm gray later this week. Will be getting window treatments and I have an awesome pottery barn chandelier that will be hung.

    Couch is 109" x 109"

    Rug is 12' x 9'

I'm just upset it looks awful!

This couch is extremely deep so unless you're sitting half way off the couch you'll never fit your feet on it!! :)

    Any ideas?

Do you have some Houzz photos you could post of what you're like it to look like?

Definitely, the rug is too small.

I would consider a glass topped coffee table, and large enough to make a square with the couch.

I'm a big fan of big plants, especially when you're evolving the "look" and haven't made decisions yet.

You could consider a tall corner cupboard in that empty corner.

As it stands nothing is similar to anything in the room in color.....so add more of colors you already have in the room......the rug should have some teal in it or pure white or both....your trim looks white but the rug looks cream and your brain cannot decide which color it should be.

Your colors are teal white grey black and red( the floors) so work with those colors in all your accessories and any additional furniture.....the more of these colors you add to the room the more balanced it will look and no color will be too strong....at least that is how I understand it to be from reading about interior design; I am no pro!

This room has been on HOuzz forever so it must be done right! And it has your room colors.

Teal walls, grey sofa, grey and white round ottoman, pillows done in white and teal variations, an extremely large, patterned rug with a cream background, but what you see is all the teals and oranges(complement color to teal), that contrast with the books and other accessories in the room as well as the small orange chair. Something to think about.

Here is a similar room done in the same style; possibly one interpreted the other etc.

Again large patterned rug in colors of teal and orange gold and white/cream, accent table in gold and fun chairs in print to mimic the rug....

Thanks but the walls won't be this color - they are getting painted a warm gray this week. And our floors are being refinished to darker brown they won't be red.
    It looks beautiful!
I think you should just wait until after you paint and refinish your floors to ask for decorating advice since the colors will be different from suggestions given.

What paint color have you chosen? Let's be certain we are working with the same base pigment since your sofa is gray as well.

Rug looks a bit undersized (& needs a rug pad). I find the table too small and dull. But,as you add pieces, including lamps, it will all come together.

I think the problem is not the couch, but the accessories. You have 2 white square pillows and one long black and grey lumpy one that doesn't go with them at all. Get rid of that one first.

Then, deal with the lighting. Take all the bulbs out of that fan and replace them with very, very low-lumen bulbs--just enough light to navigate the room.

Light from the center of the ceiling is horrible--unflattering to the room; creates harsh, deep shadows; and the brighter it is the drearier the room looks.

Your Collanade is on the left...which has a green base. The paint on the right is Popular Gray and it has a red base. It appears your sectional is also from a red base. Do you have another photo of it from a showroom or a catalogue? Is the photo I have a true representation of your sectional during the day and night? The current paint appears to be a deeper version of Colonnade. Thoughts?

So here are photos of the couch online. It's gray but definitely can look a little greenish in some lighting. Almost the entire downstairs of my house will be agreeable gray with the dining room, formal living room and this room (family room) in collanade gray. Unless you recommend something different!!

Browns, beige, cream, gray and orange. Proof positive that it can work.

I vote for waiting for paint and flooring before judging. Take the rug out totally for right now. You will have to remove it anyway for redoing the flooring and I think it is what is throwing you off. I love the coach and the chandelier.

I agree with all the others...somehow I think a plusher rug would be better here as well, this one is kinda thin and flimsy looking. Might be better for under a bed?

You have a very unique color on the walls. On my computer the gray has a bit of blue and IMO it might be nice to bring that color into the area rug which is very beige/gray.

This Karastan rug might work for the roo

Your coffee table is way too small, but the square shape is perfect.

Lauren, I just did a "sketch" of your sectional with Agreeable and Colonnade along with another gray. Look at these 3 and tell me which is closest to the hue of your sectional (daylight and evening), and explain the likeness or tell me if it needs to go more more red, green or blue. Also this helps to decide which two grays work best together for the transition from Agreeable to another gray.

Thanks Karen - I think middle and right math best. The far right looks like it has a hint of green undertone as does the couch if that makes sense. The middle color appears to have that same undertone and would bring out the lighter fibers of the couch if that makes sense :)

So you have some green poking through your gray sectional? Good to know. As you know, I added the one on the left as it appeared to work better with the PHOTO you put up! LOL OK, so Colonnade it is with its green base! Progress with checks and balances are all good.

About your rug....once you get your paint up you should reconsider your rug for color (lack thereof) and size...but first onward with the painting.

Thank you so much!!! So the one on he far right is collanade? I did have a painting consultant help me pick colors with my couch swatch I can't take all the credit :)

The rug looks very beige, so I question if it will look any better with gray walls. It is too small as well, so return that and the coffee table. Hang onto the couch and wait until the walls are painted to make other decisions. Be sure you love gray because I think it is on its way out as a trend, and you might want to move in another direction with wall color. Put that chandy on a dimmer and start thinking of your task and accent lighting; the ones you turn on to make use of the room. Ceiling fixtures, no matter how cool, are useful for seeing how to enter a room in the dark but are not flattering to people or decor. Table, floor and art lamps add the cozy feeling and ceiling fixtures can be dimmed down at that point.

Sorry to pile on, but you're asking everyone to comment on walls that will be painted a different color and floors that will be stained darker and without curtains you already purchased. You're not getting great answers because we have to project too much to "see" the whole thing.

You have beautiful warm wood floors. Why are you staining them darker instead of playing up the warmish colors of the floor? Here's why the room is gloomy--lighting as others said. But everything else adds to the gloom:

--Your huge, dark couch is placed against a nice wall of windows and occupies so much visual space. Move it out a bit to gain more flow and airiness.

--Your huge dark TV is the focus on the lovely fireplace wall. Place it on the opposite wall across from the windows.

--The rug is nice, but too monochromatic to balance the dark sofa. You need a larger one with some pattern that picks up a tiny bit of the current warm floor color and also has , place the dark sofa in front of beautiful windows. If you are going to change out the rug, then incorporate a bit of the current floor color in the new rug pattern, along with an accent color that works with the gray rug. But do this after the walls are painted.

A larger rug, not necessarily this one, picks up warm floor color, sofa color, the future wall color, but adds other colors you can echo with lovely sofa pillows and curtains.

--A dark coffee table takes up more visual space. Get a round clear coffee table framed in wood that matches the floor. Ditto accent tables. They don't have to be these, but you get the idea--connect furnishings to existing floor.

I've copied the Braely from the website (complete with pillows) and the one you copied for me...just checking and rechecking. The yellow pillows (even if it's not one of your favs?, will at least establish once and for all your sectional does NOT have a red base...even though that's how it reads with your one lone overhead light. That said, I did a "sketch" with a rug that has yellow which also allows me to recheck your paint choice. LOL I like yellow and love the rug but I would like to know from you if you want a green with the gray or some other secondary color for your room...what style and what size?

Like the new light fixture. Like those wide shallow fixtures.

Rug is too small on one side and too large on the other side. It isn’t balanced. I would recommend a custom-sized rug. You can get one made from any carpet supplier - they just bind the edges of carpeting and cut it to the size you need. I don’t think a standard rug is going to fit well in this space.

I agree with Heather. I saw it but couldn’t put it into words.

That candelabra is cool, in an outscale sort of way. Neat. Just keep the light levels low.

And good decision to get rid of that one long, lumpy pillow.
