Flooring & backsplash recommendations?

last modified: 7 years ago

I want to refinish the cabinets to an ivory/cream (at least, I think I do. I am open to suggestions). The granite counter is staying.

I need recommendations for flooring (which will extend into the foyer) and a back splash. Help please!

What colors do you like and make you feel happy? What colors are in the rest of your home? Can you just use the hardwoods that you already have and extend them through the whole area?

Put the backsplash on hold for now. wait until everything else is done. (i have tons of tiles for you to choose from so post a new pic when you're ready).

If you don't want the same wood as the other room, then do a simple charcoal slate tile or a porcelain tile. 24x24 would be a good size.

I would do a neutral white. don't do a cream color as it always seems to look dingy.

This one is Alabaster (just make sure you have 4000K bulbs otherwise it looks yellow)

Simply White is an all around excellent choice

Here's a before^ and after. cab color is SW Creamy

BTW, if painting them yourself, go to this blog^ for the how to's. she has the best instructions and is spot on w/her instructions.

add trim work to your end panels for a better looking finish

want to address the gap on top? add some boxes or large crown.

The cabinetry and the granite seem to work together very well. The problem is the floor tiles...they have a pink undertone, at least in the photos.

The backsplash tile seems to be the same as the floor tiles, and the backsplash tile size is a bit large. IMO, the backsplash tile needs to match exactly one of the colors in the granite.

    Thank you everyone!

felizlady - the backsplash is actual tile; the floor is linoleum! Both are old and not in the best shape. I didn't choose it. It came with the house.

BeverlyFLADeziner - THANK YOU!! I didn't know that SW program existed. Unfortunately I can't continue the wood floor into the kitchen & foyer. One of the previous owners pulled it out to put tile down. The house was built in 1955 and the wood floors are original in the rest of the house... Not sure if I could get them to match.

Beth H. : I am not painting them myself. I am hiring someone with much more experience! But thank you for the recs!

We actually like the cabinets the color they are at the moment, if they are in good condition, we see no need to paint them. We would focus on the flooring and backsplash. If you can't continue the wood into the kitchen we would look into tiles.

As for backsplash we would look into a color that goes with the colors in your countertop. If you can take some to wherever you're looking at getting your backsplash so you can match the backsplash exactly.

For flooring, I would probably choose large-format porcelain tiles which look like wood. The color should coordinate with the adjoining flooring no matter what you choose. I think gray is a temporary trend and it does not go with cream cabinets. For the backsplash, look at tiles which match one of the lighter colors in your granite. Subway tiles are very popular and come in many sizes and colors, or you could use another shape. Avoid very ornate or shaped tile.
