A simple push opener and you can use your knee if your hands are full and your KD should have reccommended one from the beginning.

I second or third the idea of using your foot. If the cabinet is perfectly flush install some sort of small lip (finger pull as partim suggested or screw a narrow piece of wood molding a few inches long to the bottom of the drawer that your toe can catch). I unintentionally created a quarter inch height difference between my trash door and the inner cabinet and I love it for that very reason. Hands free.

sorry guys. Doing gymnastics and yoga positions (left foot partially rising, balance right) just to throw out my trash seems a bit much to keep a trash can hidden. But I guess you people also hide your appliances and pretend the kitchen is your local meeting hall for entertaining.

I don't understand why you don't pull open the trash before filling both hands with trash.

If you had a foot-operated trash in the past, I can see where opening the trash first would require a small amount of re-training on your part, but once you have established the "open trash first" routine as a habit, you won't even think about it any more.

My kitchen is U-shaped - there is no place to put a stand-alone trash can. The trash/recycling pullout in our new kitchen is so much more convenient than our previous trash can under the sink.

No, I just think trash cans are ugly and don't want to look at them.

I didn't want a pull out when we redid our kitchen. I have a small can under the sink and take it where I need it to be.

We used to have a standalone trash with a foot pedal in our old Kitchen -- but, our dogs learned how to use it and it became a problem! They know about the trash pullout now, but they haven't been able to get it open...yet! (They're Standard Poodles...we were warned they were smart, but trash pullout, really?!?!)

I too think seeing trash cans is not very nice. I have a small trash can under the sink lined with a plastic bag. When it is full, I tie it up and take it to the garage to be put in a big garbage can. Never had any problem doing it this way....in fact, grands from little on knew where Grandma's trash went.

Pretty condescending. Just because someone likes to keep their trash in a cupboard instead of in a trashcan that may be in the way doesn’t mean they think their kitchen is a showroom or meeting hall. And even if they do, how does that impact you?

Thanks again for the suggestions. To the design pro - we just bought the house and I am used to my simple human where I just step on the pedal. This new kitchen doesn’t have a space where I can put the trash can. I will task my husband to figure it out!

Purchase a 5" or 6" hole saw. Attach it to a drill. And drill a large hole in the counter directly above the trash bin. Then all trash and scraps can easily be swept into the rubbish bin from the kitchen counter without having to open the bin.

Be sure to drill steady and straight to create a clean cut.

I know i shouldn' t say this, but i was so happy to have a garbage pull out after 30 years of putting garbage under the sink that i can't even relate to this problem. Put the pull out by your prep area, near your clean up area and problem solved.

Aack! Who would do this? Not only would it ruin the look of the counter, it wouldn't control the stink emanating from the trash. Or the flies.

The no touch simple human trash can is amazing! I definitely can relate. Perhaps using the pull out for recycling and go back to the simple human can for your waste?

Get a foot pedal. I had one in my previous kitchen which didn't have space for a wild trash can and it was okay.

In my latest remodel, after a little time with storing my trash in a cabinet as though it were a precious crockpot or something, I converted my double trash pullout to dog food/bird seed cabinet and now have my trash and recycling in trash cans. If I didn't have space for the cans I'd go back to the pedal but if I ever do another kitchen remodel, I will be sure to have a space for free wild loose trash cans because they are glorious.

We have a bottom cabinet that the trash bin goes in and where the drawer would be above it there is just an opening. The dog doesn't bother it nor the cats and it's easy to put things in without requiring 2 hands. We have never had a fly problem and when and if it smells it's usually time to be emptied.

The house I am in now had a pull out and it was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.

Not a fan of floor or hidden trash bins. I have a perfect sized round white and light, plastic pail/pot in which I place a place a plastic grocery bag....it sits in one sink bowl and when full so easy to dispose of. ....sink always clean. No mess, no fuss, no bending, No smell.

I have a small Very clean pail. And open a plastic grocery bag so that covers all the edges of the pail. And place it in the sink. The grocery bag is removed when full and replaced. At least once a day...no smells, always clean, ....sure makes my life easy and eliminates a lot of steps. Recyclables go to recyling boxes located outdoors. No smell. Ultra clean, and nothing touches the sink...remove it it when or if I need that part of the sink and naturally I always clean the sink.....but it is clean to start with. Think about peeling potatoes.....some peel them in a sink, others line the sink with paper to capture debris, while some peel directly intto a trash can on the floor......many ways iclsuing recycling....here everything is controlled. and may be moved as needed.

Hamma, I considered the SH for our kitchen, but a U-shaped kitchen with the sink/prep area close to the corner has just no room for it. Also, I grew up with a (sort of ) pullout trash, and find that freestanding trash bins are more often than not, obstacles to getting around.

I don’t understand the people who are saying that trash in a cupboard is disgusting or stinks. We have always had a pull out except for one year in temp housing, and it has never smelled or been gross. I guess if I lived alone and it sat for a week with trash in it I could see it smelling, but we end up emptying every day or two and have never had an issue.

PaP it sounds like that system works for you, I think most people would find a small bag like that way too small to be practical. Instead of eliminating steps it would add a bunch for us, we would be chaging the bag so often we might as well just run out to the garbage bin with trash. Same with recyclables outside. We recycle a lot, I would hate to not have it right by the sink (we rinse out cans and jars prior to putting them in).

FWIW, we're installing a servo drive on ours - Blum makes them, I think Rev A Shelf might also. I cook far too much, with messy hands, and I don't have room to walk around an open trash bin cabinet - plus our trash cabinet is located where I might run into it if I'm not too involved in cooking. The servo will open the trash cabinet far enough to easily use the full first bin. A Tip On is another good suggestion - we're using that on our toe kick drawer. A compost bin (they make nice looking ones) if you've reason to compost is another option (and one I'll also incorporate).

Like you, I had the foot peddle can which I liked, but using a light touch of the knee or side of my foot will be far easier I'm hoping.

I have the Kesseboehmer trash pull out with the push to open mechanism. It’s great! Push it with your knee and opens wide enough to throw away your trash.

It can also open by pulling on the handle then it does the soft close.

I love my pull out trash bin, but I did have to train myself to open it before starting work when I’m cleaning or cooking. No big deal, just open it a few inches, you’ll get used to it

I still hate it bc I have to walk around the pulled out drawer. I open it up before I start cooking but when I forget I have a clean pinky finger to open it. Lol

Sue430 - add a push open to it and you will love it even more! Small bump with the knee and it opens right up!

We are planning on doing an IKEA kitchen and I pointed this knee bump feature out to my husband. he pooh-poohed it. Now I am going to tell him about the opinions in this thread. I will definitely be installing that option.

I really miss having the Servo drive. Just a tap of the knee and the trash pullout is open. No gloopy, chicken juice hands to dirty the handle.

Hi CD is your Waste Bin Pull-Out, Kesseböhmer Single Bottom Mount comes with push to open mechanism, or you need to buy additional hardware to go with the frame?

@Claire Liang I would assume it comes with the mechanism, but my cabinet maker ordered and installed it, so I’m not sure.

However, I would like to retract my positive review of it. It worked great for a few weeks, then it just stopped working. No matter how much they tried to adjust it, it just became a hassle to deal with. We ended up removing the mechanism. My cabinet maker also stopped installing the Kessebohmer push to open mechanism for other projects, they said the concept was great but their mechanism is faulty.

Thats too bad! We got the IKEA mechanism and have had no issues with it for almost 3 years now I use it all the time and it works great.

@kazmom do you have the electric Ikea one? Did you install it on a non-Ikea cabinet? My cabinet maker offered to replace with an electric one, but it wasn't going to work because we didn't have an easy way to get power to it.

Yes, we have the electric one. we ran an outlet to the cabinet when we did the remodel.

i dont think there is a perfect solution. The only way imo is to find what is most lliveable of all alternatives for you. and follow through on the change.

We liked the "vintage" trash compactor that came with our house so much that we're installing a new one in our remodel. Just step on the pedal and it opens, then bump it with your knee to push closed. All our appliances are backordered except the compactor -- I wonder why? :) In our rental, we have a regular pedal trash can and it's just not as easy to use, maybe because it's located at the end of the kitchen instead of right beside the sink. Hands-free trash is the way to go.

Why do you have to keep it open? We cook and bake in our kitchen and don’t leave our garbage cabinet open We did install the auto opener so we can just bump it with our knee to open it and that is nice when your hands are full.

She does because that's the way she cooks. We all do things differently. Nobody is wrong. It's just trash.
