Nice house. Yes, keep the shutters. They are the right size and they look good. Paint them when you get around to it or if you need an easy cheerful change right away.

When renovating a neglected property, spending a bit of time making the entrance that the family uses welcoming will pay off. It may be as simple as a welcome mat outside and a throw rug inside, and a piece of favorite art hung where it's the first thing seen. Or it could mean getting a stubborn old lockset tuned up by a locksmith, a sticking door fixed, and a broken outside light fixture replaced. Your choice.

Here's some relatively simple changes to think about making : 1. Remove box on front gable at roofline, if possible 2. Add black iron hardware (hinges and stays) to shutters to look like working shutters. 3. Add full length shutters to either side of front door. 4. Replace dated small white front light fixture with 2 larger black carriage style lanters on either side of front door. (3 & 4 will fill in the awkward empty paces on either side of the front door) 5. Add white wood window boxes with real flowering plants to the windows on garage elevation. 6. Add a front path to the street. 7. Add a white picket fence and garden gate in front of your house (from a place like walpole - not a plastic job from a big box store). 8. landscape, landscape, ...

That tree is a crepe myrtle. I don't know if they're hardy that far north.
