how this home got its modern look

Can someone please explain what was done to this home to give it its modern look. What materials were used and how was it put together?

    New materials including horizontal wood siding and new ?metal? cladding on garage and at entry. New entry element. New windows with modern mullion pattern. New retaining wall/stair wall at the entry. Whomever did the design did a good job.
