There is no way your fireplace can be the "focal point" of this room, stuck in a corner and competing with that huge black wall unit.

My eye went first to the drapes...and that light fixture. I don't know if its the color of the drapes or even the use of drapes. Or if there are too many drapes..Not a professional so I can't really put my finger on it but they seem very overwhelming to me. I'm sure someone will along to give you some good advice. You have a very pretty fireplace wall though.

What about the tv wall console thing? Seems way too big. Is that a must stay? we were posting at the same time...

It's a nice room with beautiful hardwoods and a rustic fireplace. If you want the fireplace to be the focal point, I would stick to neutral colors.

1. Take out the reddish rug. It's competing with the fireplace. Replace with a neutral greige color

2. Replace the huge media center with a simple wood stand and hang the tv.

3. Is there another room you could put the third love seat next to the fireplace? Can replace with a single swivel cozy chair. Or nothing right now. The gray color couches are perfect.

4. The chandelier seems to be competing with the stone fireplace.

5. Hang the curtain rods higher near the crown moulding and hang creamy colored panels.

6. Lean a dark framed mirror on the fireplace mantel. I know...lots of people are against it, but it would help brighten the look.

7. Perhaps a round, rustic coffee table to soften all the right angles.

Nice space. What stands out to me is all your furniture is lined up around the walls. I think working on the layout and getting different TV console will make a big difference.

What you can do right now is take down the curtains. They are very drab and are doing nothing for the space...then move the furniture. Slide the sofa to the left and move the loveseat forward out of the window. The three pieces need to be much closer together. I would also replace the rug. It’s too “loud” and wall mount your tv. Find a large painting for over the fireplac.

I agree with most of the comments above, especially about the drapes (they are too busy and too low), the huge entertainment center, and the bright rug.

It's my opinion that you have too much stuff in there. And if you want the fireplace to be the focus, shouldn't you have your furniture arranged to face it?

I don't know what it looks like in real life, but that ceiling light creeps me out. It looks like something evil is growing up there.

Celery Girl has great ideas, imo. The chandelier is blingy and coolio. Maybe you might like to add a couple more blingy/shiny silver items here and there around the room to make it a bit of a theme. See her silver curtain rod? Nice.

I think the rust-colored rug and Celery Girl's suggested scattered pillows does a good job of making the warm floor and cool-toned sofas make sense.

I agree the black entertainment center doesn't make sense in 2019, and I agree with Celery Girl and others that the TV would be so much better wall mounted.

With the sofas moved closer together (away from the wall), perhaps there's room for a small table and armchair/ottoman next to the fireplace for a cozy reading spot.

Sorry, the light fixture is striking but does not play well with any of the other colors or items.

ETA: My comment is not due to dislike. If I had a place for it, I’d be asking where the light came from.

I would demo the fireplace to start

Celerygirl did great on the colors. The big entertainment unit has to go. The other huge problem is the layout with all the seating lined up against the walls. I would replace both loveseats with chairs and pull them up onto the rug. At the same time, pull the rug back under the sofa and leave space between it and the new media console you're going to buy.

When you buy new curtains, pay attention to the header. If they come with a rod pocket, do not use it. Plan to hang them with rings and clips. Like so:

To my eye, I would lose the loveseat (replace with a nice chair and side table, perhaps), the entertainment center and the patterned drapes. Oh, and the red rug. It’s a nice room, it just needs some tweaking.

Is there a way to have some seating around/near the fireplace, perhaps two chairs? And get rid of one of the love seats? I can't tell whether there are two love seats and a sofa, or whether the love seat was tried out in different spots.

Also. how do you use/want to use the room, mainly for TV watching or also for entertaining and reading/conversing? As is, the seating seems very far apart for conversation, and there are no tables to put a drink or snack down.

For heavens sake, folks don't need to totally get rid of large expensive features of their house to tweak it to look better. The way your fireplace is angled, you have an advantage that you can expand your seating and viewing to either include or not include the fireplace. Start thinking of it as a plus. I have the same set up in my house and I am glad I don't have to put the TV over the fireplace. TV's on top of fireplaces have the disadvantage of being both at a bad viewing angle and I can't help but think bad for the unit if you use the fireplace a lot, I don't care what they say about heat not being an issue. But I guess since most electronics wear out in five years anyway, the long term damage it might do is immaterial.

Lot of gentle little tweaks here that will make the room less constrast-y and make the fireplace and TV cabinet play nice together. Use some of the earth tones in the fireplace for color inspiration for curtains and bring some natural pieces into the room to play nice with the rustic fireplace. Unless you hate rustic, at which point you may want to consider refacing the fireplace . . . But I think once the curtains stop competing with the fireplace, the room goes from "meh" to stunning and that fireplace becomes a gorgeous focal point. Particularly if you put some "to scale" art up there. That copper piece is very nice but can't be fully appreciated at a distance, needs a more intimate display spot.

I think your room will look much better if you walk in the front door and see an inviting conversation area, rather than seeing a TV, even if it is on a less imposing TV stand.

I suggest switching the sofa and the TV, then arranging the 2 love seats in a U shape with the sofa, with arms just touching. Like a big conversation pit. This would also let you put a coffee table in front of the sofa, without it being in the way of the new traffic path which would go across the front of the TV, along the staircase wall. Mount the TV on the wall and just put a long but shallow shelf or cabinet below it. Nothing too deep. Add a good size art piece above the mantle of the fireplace to draw attention to it.

This leaves you with no seating directly in front of the fireplace, so maybe a small games table with 2 chairs beside the fireplace, in front of the window. The good thing is that your love seats have a low back, so the top of the fireplace is still visible.

If you really want to see more of the fireplace, leave that one love seat where it is in front of the window near the fireplace, or replace it with 1 or 2 chairs.

Can you take a photo of the current sofa wall, including the doorway near the fireplace?

This is what I mean by a games table near the fireplace. With comfortable chairs, they could also be used for TV viewing. A table is good in a family room for cards, board games, puzzles, snacks, crafts etc. A cabinet for storage could go to the right of the window.

Your space is long. You definitely have enough room for a 2/3 1/3 split. Up to you whether you combine the TV wit the fireplace or have the TV be a separate seating group. At least one of the love seats needs to go.

I would try a horseshoe shape with the sofa and loveseats before getting rid of one of the loveseats....

I am guessing that this will all fit since I don't know your room and furniture dimensions, but here is the idea. Maybe you only have room for 2 chairs at the game table, which would be OK too.

If your TV is not exactly across from the sofa, you can put it on an arm and move it where you like it when you are watching TV.

I think gduplessis, celerygirl, and groveraxel covered most of my points. I think I'd get rid of the love seat by the fireplace (so not blocking it), and move the one from the front wall forward until it's a conversational distance from the other couch. The the two make an L that includes TV and fireplace. You can add a small swivel chair by fireplace if space allows.

Then I'd make the zone by the front door a different space, rather than the zone by the fireplace as partim did -- it could be a game table with two chairs, or a desk, or a bench with a boot tray... anything you have use for. The room is too long to be treated as one zone, which is why the love seats at either end are barely in shouting distance now.
