Sofa color help Pebble or Ash

last modified: 7 years ago

We are looking at getting two new sofas for this room. One would go on the wall where the chair is and the other would replace the khaki sectional with it's back toward the kitchen.

Walls are SW agreeable gray

Both are Pottery Barn performance slub tweed.

Pebble is left
Ash is right

The pebble is too light for my taste

Thanks everyone. Close vote (7-5 if you back mine out), but we actually agreed with the small majority that the Ash looked best. The few people (including the designer) that saw it in person all thought Ash as well.

Don't think we could go wrong with either and with the small samples we we're thinking pebble, but these bigger ones had the gray Ash catching our eye more.

The kitchen looks pinky-beige in the photo. Both sofa color choices are too light, in my opinion. I would consider a medium gray to go with the rug and contrast with the kitchen. If this is your main seating and tv area, it will get a lot of use, and pale fabrics show dirt more easily.

We still need to finish off with pillows, end tables, maybe different rug, wall art ect. but thought I'd share how it looks with the Pottery Barn Townsend sofas in Sunbrella Slub Tweed Ash.

Both are beautiful. The ash is reading a little bluer in that room, which we like!

Wondering how your sofas are wearing. In the process of choosing between the same two fabrics and our walls are agreeable gray as well. Thank you!

Looking at this fabric- how is it holding up

Its holding up very well. We have two young kids and it gets plenty of spills. Usually blotting with a damp cloth will get it up. We even had marker or something more aggressive on it (maybe sharpy...I can't remember exactly) and my wife followed the Sunbrella recommendations and it came out completely.

Thank you for this post...I've been going back and forth between these two fabrics for a slipcovered sofa and chair. Just waiting for a sale. We have a very similar color scheme and I definitely prefer the Ash!

Repainting our living room. The current color is SW Agreeable Gray and in a south facing living room with lots of light it tends to read very beige not gray at all. We were looking to go grayer or whiter.

    All swatches are from Samplized.

Again Couch is Pottery Barn Sunbrella Performance Sub Tweed Ash. Trim is SW Extra White

    Left to right.

Top row left of picture SW Light French Gray. Right of picture and falling down is BM Dove Wing, BM Oxford White, BM White Dove, and BM Chantilly Lace.

Bottom Row: BM Coventry Gray, BM Metropolitan, SW Pussywillow, BM Revere Pewter, BM Collingwood, BM Gray Owl, SW Eider White, BM Classic Gray, and BM Decorators White

The Gray Owl read very green in real life, harder to see in photo. Collingwood looked almost identical to the Agreeable Gray. The ones on the far left read too blue against the couch (Using Light French Grey in our hallways and stairs though). White Dove (using in Kitchen and Bath) was a favorite, but just didn't work with the couch. White dove read too creamy in that room but perfectly clean in the open kitchen next door (must be the couch).

Finalist were Eider White, Classic Gray, and Oxford White and likely Eider White (wife's favorite).

Sherwin Williams Eider White turned out great with the SW Extra White Trim. Hard to tell from photo, but much cleaner and less beige than the SW Agreeable Grey.

Side note, finally got a larger rug.

Hi Todd, we are looking at that exact couch/fabric. Have you had any issues with the fabric pilling? I saw reviews from a few years ago of pilling issues with the tweed but heard someone say they changed the tweed fabric since then.

No issues at all.  Great fabric.

Thanks for sharing and answering questions about the fabric. I'm going to get it in the sunbrella slub tweed darker gray because of my dogs. Do you still recommend the fabric and no pilling?

    Yes fabric is great.

Okay, so I got the Performance Brushed Basketweave Slate, York Slope Arm Slipcovered Deep Seat Loveseat 60" with Bench Cushion, Down Blend Wrapped Cushions, Performance Brushed Basketweave Slate, York Slope Arm Slipcovered Deep Seat Grand Sofa 95" with Bench Cushion, Down Blend Wrapped Cushions, Performance Brushed Basketweave Slate. I'm so happy I did. They are beautiful so far, except that the slipcovers are too short and kind of look like floods. I'm working on a resolution to change that.

Todd Thank you for this post. I'm trying to decide on fabric and paint. Just wondering, about your fabric; is it Sunbrella? Does it get heavy use? Your room came out great!

Help?! How have the pottery barn sofas and the sunbrella performance tweed fabric worn over time? Cushions keep their shape? I have the chance to buy a 2 year ild pottery barn york sofa in sunbrella performance tweed - ash for $1600. It seems to be in very good condition.

I have two 25 lb dogs who will be on the sofa.
