Which kitchen format do you like?

Although the island option opens it up, is the island on the angle odd? The round dining room table would be placed in the opened up living room - on the other side of the room. The L shape design would allow for the round table to be in the old dinning room (where island is in the first option).

Can the island be oval? That would make it easier to get around.

    sorry, neither!

Did a real KD come up with those ideas?

No way on the island. I think your other layout can be improved, too.

Neither. Do not put things at angles! Angles are awkward (coming from a former corner sink owner). The second layout is better, but get the sink and the stovetop out of the corners.

    Neither options look great..

Could you please post a floorplan of the entire floor? Or at least adjecent rooms. Where does the doorway lead to? Can you walk around the tall cabinet section? How big/small is the dining?

You need an actual kitchen designer not a cabinet salesperson and that angled island is completely useless and looks very odd.Neither of these layouts is good and corner sinks and cooktops are always a bad choice.Unless this is a single storey house where venting can go straight up the cooktop should be on an outside wall.

Yikes - none of the above. That island dumped into the middle of everything at an odd angle is just....No. Whoever came up with those should not be allowed to "design" kitchens. Post a measured floor plan and start a new post asking for layout help, people here will help you come up with a FAR better plan than the 2 abominable non-options shown here.

Number one: no and no. And definitely no

Number two: never put baby in the corner. Nor a sink or oven.

Needs a total re-do on both options. I think you also need a kitchen designer if you or someone else things number 1 and 2 are viable options.

Why don't you like the original layout? Neither new proposal improves on the original.

Ok, as suggested, I reposted for new lay out advice. We would like to open up the kitchen, for an open concept feel, but this will be challenging. We have our work cut out for us!

I like the first one, but with the sink moved to under the window. Not sure why the designers dislike the cooktop/oven in the corner so emphatically. Ours ended up there - with a KD - in a similar compromise and it is not a problem.

    Angles waste space.

Where does a person stand to rinse dishes in the sink and load the dishwasher with its door open?

If you are opening up the wall to the DR, do you need to keep the eat in space, or would you be willing to expand the kitchen into that area? You could then expand the DR to give more space around the table. If you wanted seating facing the kitchen, you could always put that at the single peninsula (by the DR)

I would definitely want my eat-in kitchen space to be between my kitchen and dining room so that it can be used for overflow dining. Ideally, I’d eliminate the “eat-in” part and have a larger kitchen with island/peninsula seating like Joy suggests.

To Joy and Shead. Yes, expanding that way would make sense but we had planned on walling that off to expand laundry room...using that space for mud room and 1/2 bath. Our laundry room is like a small closet right now.

Are you able to change out the french doors? They're limiting your ability to expand into the current dining room space...

I definitely see why you want to change the layout! Your current stove placement doesn't have a hood or large enough landing zone. Not safe.

Can you change the windows? If so, you could put the stove on the long wall and put a window of either side of it. Then you can put the sink on the short wall or on the new peninsula (just not at an angle).

But really... Do you need all that space for a mudroom, laundry room, and half bath? Can you make the mudroom be the laundry room too?

You don't want to wind up with a strange disproportionate house with a small kitchen and giant auxiliary rooms. Houses with large kitchens have large laundry rooms, medium kitchen... medium laundry rooms... etc...

Folks on this forum (gardenweb actually) stopped me from remodeling my house to have a large kitchen and a single small living room.... very grateful I listened.

Please stop with the angles less than 90....
