Composting Sweet Gum Balls

I have a sweet gum tree in my front yard that drops 200-300 gallons worth sweet gum balls every year. In the past I have tilled them into my garden in the fall but it takes a couple of years for them to break down. I was just wondering if anyone has come up with a better way of composting these things?

Thanks

Randy
