how is your experiment going?

None are up yet, but I don't expect them to be, until after the last frost, (May) when it warms up.

I start tomatoes outdoors in a small, unheated greenhouse. That's kind of like winter sowing (just on a larger scale). Some varieties definitely seem to sprout faster in colder temperatures than others. This year, for me, Black Vernissage was first. Last year, I think it was some boar tomato or other (brown with stripes) tied with another. For me, tomatoes can sprout when it still freezes every other day (long before the last frost), but they take anywhere from a few days to a few months to sprout, depending on the variety, the year, whether the vents are open when, which container they're in, the soil, and so forth. Sausage is a good all-around tomato (not the fastest sprouter, but decently fast, and one of my favorite tomatoes).

Wood Sprite Gardens hasn't posted since April. So, you might have to wait a little while for a response, if you get one. I usually have lots of seeds left over after a seed offer, but I believe most people consider it over after about a month.

Duh. Pretty obvious now that you point out the date of the posting, Cyntia. Real gardeners plan ahead, I guess. But I still have time to start seeds indoors. Last frost date here in Northern California is early April. I just moved here three weeks ago, so there will surely be a learning curve for me. My last garden was in the Andes mountains in Ecuador about 5 years ago. That was amazing. Year round growing season, but the bugs are fierce and scary. The place here is near an extinct volcano and the soil is black, black, black! I'm hoping that means it's rich and fertile, too. Wish me luck!
