Are your cabinets beige (uppers) and white (lowers)?
It may be the lighting, but I’m sure others see these two colors, too.

Gray soapstone would be better than a black soapstone counter. Modern Formica in a gray leathered finish may also be good. How about a bit of simple-but-colorful washable wallpaper or stick-on decorator paper for a backsplash.
Appliance white never matches white cabinets.
A stainless slide-in range will have a dark-glass window in the door. It’s not a problem.
Add some color: art, dish towels, canisters, a rug.

felizlady's right about appliance white being difficult with white cabinets. Stainless appliances are a much better choice IMO. Yes, add color with art, towels, rug, pot on stove, etc.

Irene - I really like the backsplashes shown in your pics and think I’ll go in that direction.

I really love the stainless squares as a backsplash. Can I do it with soapstone or would it be better with a white countertop. With glossy cabinets and backsplash, would a matte counter top be better? One last question. Kitchen was originally painted a bright green and I was planning on an aqua blue but chickened out and had it painted beige to warm it up. Should I paint it white if I’m going with the SS appliances and backsplash?

I personally like the white glossy countertops, especially if kitchen is small, add some black into the mix with lighting etc. leave the beige for a while and see what you think when it’s all finished, most of the pics I see are white walls, but it might start to look a bit stark. Depends what the kitchen leads out to. It will look lovely when completed, need to see pics
