What am I doing wrong?

I have tons of succulents that are all doing very well. I’ve had them for a long time with no major problems. For some reason, I can not grow any senecio strings. My string of bananas all dried/shriveled up to little brown stems and shriveled up bananas. Multiple try’s with multiple plants. The same thing is happening with my string of pearls. I have bought three now and the same thing keep happening. The strings dry up to brown stems and the pearls all shrivel and dry up too. I’ve tried watering more, watering less, not watering at all. Full sun, shade, t5 5000k lights. Why can I not grow these? Please tell me what I’m doing wrong. Thanks for any advice.

I tried to post 5 different pics of the whole thing, but for some reason it wouldnt let me. It wasn’t overpotted to start. It’s in a 3 inch pot and it was two string of pearls planted together (a green and a variegated). Originally I put both plants In a 4 inch pot together. They died back so much, I moved them to the 3 inch pot and it was full, but they continued to die back/shrivel up and this is what I’m left with. This also happened with each of my string of bananas. I just can’t seem to grow these. Any other thoughts? Sorry I can’t post a better pic, I tried, but houzz wouldn’t post them for some reason. Thanks for your help and advice.

Soil your using or maybe it doesn't like the clay pot. With other plants doing well that's odd this one kind of plant doesn't do well.

Yeah, that’s what’s driving me crazy! I have soooo many succulents, I even grow them from seed, and these give me so much trouble. I make my own soil mix using cactus soil, perlite, and lots of uncoated aquarium gravel. It’s very rocky and fast draining. All other succs really seem to thrive under my care, except these damn Senecio strings. Does anyone know if these have a much higher water requirement than most? That’s the only thing I can think of. I feel like since they’re shriveling up to dry brown stems, it seems like a watering issue, but I’m just not sure. Thank you for your response and advice.

yes, watering little more ofen than other succulents, just don't overdo it :) It may be a good idea to give them bit of a haircut when getting too long. How big is the gravel you are using (comparing to perlite) ? What is visible in your photo looks also etiolated - so some more light....

    ND,

Everyone finds their own bugaboo plant - mine was Aeonium tabuliforme in San Diego and now Crocomesia 'Lucifer' here on the hill.

I'm not suggesting that you give up (my personal toll was seven plants, yet I could grow every other Aeonium quite well), yet this might be THAT PLANT THAT DEFIES.

    Rina-

I wish I could give mine a haircut, but these never survive long enough to need:(. The gravel is mixed sizes, but comparing to perlite about the same size, some are a little bigger, some are smaller. And I don’t think they are actually etiolated. I think they just look that way because the pearls keep drying/shriveling up and then falling off, leaving lots of space on the stems. Thank you for your response and advice.

Cactusmcharris- Thank you, it definitely makes me feel better to hear that there are others out there who have no issues with most/other plants/succs, and then find they have one “bugaboo”. I like that:) Of course, when you come upon that plant that gives you so much trouble and you just can’t get to get to thrive (or survive), it just makes you want it so much more!!! Lol. So far, I’m up to 5 with these Senecio strings. I have tried with 3 pearls and 2 bananas. I still have 1 tiny pot of bananas and, after doing this shriveling, drying up, dying thing, they have actually started growing a bit. It’s very tiny and a little pathetic looking, but they’re growing for some reason. I thought I was going to tossing it soon, but left it for a little longer and, suddenly, new strings started growing from cuts I had made and then teeny tiny ones popped up from the soil. I’m hoping and doing my best not to kill it, so we will see. As far as the pearls, I can’t bear to watch another die! So I don’t think I will be buying anymore.

Thank you you all for your responses and advice. I very much appreciate everyone’s input.
