I would remove the sloppy bedskirt and provide a set of steps to help one negotiate getting into the high bed. You need bigger bedside lamps too.

Agreed, no canopy. The bedding looks old and dated. I would skip the bedskirt also. Clean, white sheets and duvet and perhaps a coverlet in a soft sage green would be enough.

You mentioned that this was to be a vacation rental, but did you buy the furnishings or did it come with?

The bed is strangely high. I think it has the wrong kind of box spring.

Night stand should be the height of the bed, you could add bun feet to raise it. Or at least stack a few books under the lamp to make reading in bed easier.

No to a canopy, yes to fresh & new bedding. (also,consider lowering height of bed...might just take a low profile box spring to do so) And lamps and art and a rug or two. Fun project, so many styles and various colourways could work well in your great space.

Also ,while I sometimes like a dust ruffle on a bed,I would never do one in a rental. Because I have all the linens freshly laundered between visitors and adding a skirt every time would just be a nuisance.

My opinion - too much wood already and adding a canopy will just add more.

I'm not a fan of the current bed frame. I think you have enough logs and wood going on.

I'd look for a black metal bedframe, quite plain, and some updated bedding. I think it would look far better than the overscale pieces there now.

And the way that bed is dressed in the photo would also go a long way to improving the room. Fluffy duvet and a coordinating throw.

And I'd change out the curtains to a lighter colour as well. And while you're at it, a new black curtain rod with some heft would look nice too.

You may want to consider new side table and dresser as well. They could maybe be painted ( I know someone will call foul on painting the wood) but they don't look that special to me.

Hang your drapery panels at least 12" higher

Select some art for over the bed

Get ride of the light kits on the fan, in fact, purchase a bronze ceiling fan for this room.

Hang a patterned blanket over the loft railing for some color.

Yay to lux bedding, or at least appearing lux. Far more desirable that schlocky log furniture (sorry, imo). Love the log cabin, love the wood walls, ceiling, etc. I don't need to feel like the owner went out, harvested all the wood, and made the whole thing.

Question - what is the closet-like structure in the corner to the right of the window? I'm asking because I had always thought that a moon cutout denoted an outhouse - is that just a closet or linen cabinet?

I really was not expecting so much help. Thanks everyone! The furnishings do come w/ the place, so I'll be adding to it, and w/ all this input, I'll be busy for a while. AHhhh. I'll be swapping out the box spring for sure. And here's the fan, quilt and lamp and rug (either funny one or red) I'm thinking of switching into... Going for a bear theme.

Even in the woods I prefer luxe, probably not theme-y. Unless you primarily rent to hunters... Did you already say where you're located? We rented a place in upper MI once and it was decorated in bear and moose and wolf, every doodad you could imagine. A little over the top toward the cheap side but we did have a giggle.

I would not put in bear, moose theme, etc. if you want to upgrade. It's schtick. The room is visually very busy with all the wood. You need a simple fan, not one that is visually busy. Go with the lightered/layered/textured beddings that others have advised here. If you just have to throw in something that is themey, use a classic Hudson bay type blanket and use the color palette there. You want to brighten the room, not darken it. Go classy, not schtick.

Typically,You want a rug large enough that when getting out of bed from either side,your feet hit it and it extends past the end of the bed,too. ;-) Some folks do this with smaller rugs on each side of the bed. I'd consider if I wanted more pattern on the floor or on the bed and proceed from there. And yeah,for me, I'd avoid a theme room,BooBoo.

You’re right up the road from me. I’m in Cherry Log. The bear thing is kind of ubiquitous around here. I’m doing my cabin in more of a Scottish or English Lodge style as I want to use stuff I have. If you really want the bear thing, just do one thing in the room, a nice art piece maybe. I have a few things along those lines for fun. I have these 2 pieces in my guest room. (They now have matching frames)

And I have one art piece of a rainbow trout in my guest house. Other than that, no other bears or deer, etc.
