I thought most azaleas liked high dappled shade. The ones that do well here seem to be in oak-shaded areas, often directly under the trees.

I have some azaleas in the front of the house. I like them better as a single specimen and not as a hedge like I have them. They do better in shade in my zone 9b.

In zone 10 they will grow but not bloom very extensively, IME.

Here's a link to UF's Shrubs Facts Sheets. they list several azaleas (under "R" for Rhododendron) that might do well for you. some are fragrant too...

Thanks for the feedback guys, - right now I am still leaning towards the azaleas. Think I'll next go to a couple of the largest nurseries around here and see what's available.
