Also, she waters once a week, twice if the house gets warm and soil dries out too fast. The soil is never soggy and root system seems healthy.

My sister has elephant ears that multiply and divide every year. She gives the bulbs away she has so many. It could be a bad plant, but more likely that plant wants to go into the ground. I don't often see them in planters.

I thought that it could be something with the root system not being allowed to expand or deep enough... but it isn’t pot bound.

Thank you Jan as well! There is sentimental attachment to the plant, so replacing it isn’t ideal. She mists daily and it is elevated almost 2 ft off the ground. It also has indirect sun and it’s own plant light. It might just not be a strong plant.

I know this is a year old but check the middle of the leaves for white fuzzy looking stuff I had a similar issue with mine for the last 3 months and finally just found out I have spider mites 😖 the oldest leaves got droopy then yellowed then browned then died if I didn’t trim them first turns out a few of my plants have them they’re not super uncommon

This is old, but maybe this is helpful to someone. In my experience, Alocasias need very large pots. That one is way too small. It should be NO LESS in height AND width than 1/3 the height of the plant, prefersbly larger. They won't get pot pound like many plants. They'll just die. Alocasias also need lots of water, warmth, and fertilizer, and at least bright indirect sun, but prefer a little direct sun.

That said, 3 leaves at a time is common, but I suspect it's common because most are kept in less-than-ideal environments.

Don't toss the plant. I don't know why people suggest that. Ninety-nine point nine out of 100 times, the growing conditions, not the plant itself, are to blame.
