I was wondering about grey but not sure if I should go light, medium, or dark. I know I need to bridge the warm/cool tons I have going carefully!

Sammy thanks! we thought they went together well. I'm only playing with this tile to have an idea of color. I plan to hit a tile shop this weekend but wanted to know if I should even be looking for a white in this tone. it's called "antique white"

@Barbara Griffith Designs: Why are you advising M Chap to use the tiles from The HD when matching bullnose isn’t available?

Have you looked at any online sources for tile, M Chap? Unless you’re in a big hurry, you could request samples (which is always fun!)

I haven't. I refuse to rush the process of the backsplash. we can use the kitchen without it so I'm fine with looking around!

There are other edge options besides bullnose.

I think this is a cool look and might tie in with the grey in the counter. I like the layout and you could do it with any color.

Schluter edge comes in lots of different colors, and provides a clean edge.

Look for light gray since you have dark cabinets. Do you have a sample of the counter top you can take with you to shop?

It's about the tile pattern on the wall, it can be any product of that shape. I am sure they could find a similar tile to suit them, it's pretty standard.

picked up some larger sized ones. I think I like the bigger size. but I also think this grey is too dark. the light ones are pearl and they look muddy against the granite. just used them in the picture to get an idea of how it would look.

nope. wrong tones for your cab (and your stone)

here's the right tone for gray (your samples are too warm. too much brown in them)

You need a white that leans on the cooler end of the spectrum and grays that have more blue in them (but not too much)

I'd also stay away from the 3x6 subway tiles.

since this set up is a bit more transitional looking, pick something that leans that way.

here's a cooler white (encore Ceramics Quail Egg) in a herringbone. Using a 2x8, 3x9, 2x10, size would look better.

I just got a sample of these Nabi Harlequin from Tilebar. these are so cool

they come in other colors, but the crisp white would look great. you get 5 samples for $5, so take a look over there

I love a nice basalt tile. this would look beautiful w/your cabs and stone. since you have good lighting, it won't be too dark

Basalt pickets. if you grouted w/white, it would look like these subway basalt tiles, or just do a medium gray grout

I like the large scale subway that you have, but can you get it in the white of your first tile? That would be a good look.

I too have same exact kitchen look and very confused on backsplash ideas. I was sticking to white at this point but what something with the wow factor pretty look on the backsplash. Having a hard time. Please share your end results. I need help making up my mind.

I would just do one row of tile all around in a light to medium grey ...and paint the rest of the wall in a white with a grey undertone .....if you clutter up the entire wall it will looks to overwhelming and take away from the beauty of your countertop ! Let the countertop be the star ....and never mind the need to fill the space of backsplash ...one really only needs about 3 inches of backsplash ...unless one must have it all the way up to the cabinets ...to follow this new trend to play with backsplash .. ....your choice !

Would you consider Thassos marble, which is quite white with little veining? To me, “simple” means one color tile and includes patterns and sizes other than large subway tile in an traditional offset pattern, as long as the grout is not much darker or lighter than the tile.

Here’s a sample of Thassos (mixed honed and polished) with Carrara. I prefer the vertical orientation.

Another option is glass tile (in one color).

Your cabinets with your countertop are beautiful, countertop really pops against the richness of the wood. If I were you I would go for a white that is the same tone as the countertop. The particular marble Carolae suggested would be perfect and something I wanted to do in my own house. Since you want your countertop to be the star, a beveled subway-style would be what I would choose for your kitchen.....rich enough in material to blend in but simple enough in style to not steal he show. A simple subway style could work too in the marble.

I like beveled to. I don’t like 4x12 looks too big but love beveled I brought home some marble looking tile and I really like the look just need to find it in a 3x12. Here is a picture

I’ve read that white glass tile can show a greenish tint. Nemo Tile sells a re-crystallized glass tile that is very white and opaque. I was seriously considering this for my kitchen backsplash until I found the Thassos tile I previously posted. (My kitchen renovation isn’t done yet so I can’t post a photo of the Thassos installed.)

I would not do glass.

I like the idea of a cream color that matches the cream in the counter. At first I thought of light gray, but I don't think gray will transition well from the brown of your cabinets. Cream, goes with both the cabinet color and it matched correctly with the counter.

yeah I'm leaning away from the glass because I'm reading it needs to be installed just right.

I'm having a hard time finding the right color to go with our countertops. I would love to find a 4 x 8 beveled in a color to match (some kind for white or cream)

As long as you match a tone in the counters, you will be ok. With the (relatively) dark cabinets, though, stay to the light side, whether that's cream or pale gray..

Chap, that pic is just standard white subway beveled tile. I don't particularly care for it w/your setting. I think you can do better

not yet. we decided to go with a 4 x 8 matte white subway tile. it's ordered and should be installed next week. we like things that are a bit more simple. we love subway tile so to change it up went with the 4 x 8 size and the matte vs gloss. probably will do a medium grey grout.

I know it's not what everyone would pick but we really did try so many options and just didn't love any of them. white subway may be the safe option but I'm ok with that.

I know I am thinking the same thing I wish I could find something that wasn’t too expensive in a 4 x 8 that would give the kitchen some Pop we might do the same and just go with a subway but I found a beveled one at Home Depot shiny white except it’s 3 x 6 and a little reluctant but I like the beveled in the shiny my cabinets are cherry so they’re a little bit different tone than yours didn’t think this was going to be so difficult thanks for sharing

I agree! I gave up and when my husband said 4 x 8 matte white and our tile shop had it I ran to bring home samples. we like it better than anything else so this is it.

I think it will look great! I would do a light gray grout- the pattern will still show. Here is a photo of our renovated bathroom with white subway tile and a light gray grout.

I will show that to my husband! we just didn't want it to look dirty
