I agree with Carol's ID of the OP's photo.

Jay, your plant may be Cardamine pensylvanica, which is more common in your area. C. hirsuta has a more defined basal rosette and its terminal leaflet is usually more rounded. C. pensylvanica's terminal leaflets are elongated, like those shown in your photo. Your flowering plant does lack the mid-cauline leaves that are typical of pensylvanica, but it is still developing.

And it is definitely a foe!! Commonly known as 'shot weed' for its ability to propel its seeds a considerable distance with only the very slightest breeze or disturbance! But It is a cool season annual weed so disappears as soon as temps start to climb, however because of the enormous seed bank, will reappear again as soon as things start to cool down in fall.

Word to the wise......if at all possible, never allow this plant to flower!!

Cardamine hirsuta could be difficult to get rid of for good. They have a spot in my garden where they like to grow, and they are coming year after year despite my illusions that I pulled them all out. Friend or foe? It is up to you flora to decide :-)

Thank you jekeesl. I was kind of wondering what it really was. I was comparing it to the other plant in the bin which is noid. I'm thinking seedling prickly horse nettle, Solanaceae, but, I'll do a new thread for it if I'm still not sure.

My bad. I pulled it thinking it was a weed. It's actually native, edible, and a butterfly host plant. I need to start checking before I pull!

Jay, your plant has a heart shaped seed pod. C hirsuta has a long thin pod. So, as well as other features, the pods definitively show that they're different.

Hairy Bittercress is edible for humans, too.
