Peach Tree Dropping Leaves

Hey everyone! I seem to be having an issue with my new peach tree. I went to check on it yesterday evening and it has dropped quite a few green leaves. I would say about 25% of the leaves have fallen and when I shake the tree lightly, more leaves drop.

The tree was just planted about 2-3 months ago and has been doing great. I run my lawn irrigation every other day so the new sod doesn’t dry out too bad and the rotor heads will lightly water the peach tree also. I just soaked it with the hose last night in case it was getting too dry (haven’t had rain in a couple weeks). The only other thing that I can think of is that I coated the whole tree in neem oil about 4-5 days ago around 6pm.

Would love to get y’alls thoughts on this.

it not all that near the lawn.. cant you adjust the heads to avoid the tree??? .. though i doubt that has anything to do with this ...

it always helps to give us location ...

was out leafed out at planting?? ... did it already have the fruit on it???

i am guessing its a delayed stress from planting .... but very minimum .... it it were bad.. it would lose all it leaves ... and a while back ...

take a tablespoon.. or small trowel.. and dig down 3 to 6 inches.. near the wad planted.. and into the wad planted.. AND FIND OUT about soil moisture.. and then water ... or not... accordingly .... you are guessing.. and then asking us.. when all the power to find out.. is in the yard ...

you are correct.. lawn irrigation is usually not good enough for trees ... you know where the roots of both are.. the tree much deeper ... so water for roots an inch down for grass roots.. isnt going to be good enough for a tree ..

trees prefer a deep drink of water.. and then near drying before the net deep drench ... again.. the lawn irrigation wont do that ...

also.. repeated wetting of the leaves.. can lead to disease issues.. especially in the hatter seasons ... especially when wetted at night ... so TRY to avoid it ...

soooo.. all we are left with ... is whether i would remove the fruit for this year ... just to focus all energy in root growth .... i would have much sooner ... but now they are the size they are.. i might think.. the energy has already been spent.. so what the heck.. lets see if we can eek out a first year crop ...

and i wouldnt be surprised.. if they dont abort for whatever reason .. and if they do.. dont worry about it.. it will probably all be related to the transplant stresses ... trees can take 2 to 3 years ... to get a good enough root mass to be considered established ... be patient ...

Thanks Ken. Yes, the tree had leaves at planting. No fruit though so it has been doing very good. I will dig down and check soil moisture today. I was just making sure it didn’t have anything to do with the neem oil that I sprayed it with.

Newly planted peach trees need to be well-watered at least once or twice a week, depending on conditions, for the entire first year. Sometimes longer. It sounds to me like you haven't given it nearly enough water.
