No.2 Is Ficus Nitida. No3 is (I think) Ficus rubiginosa small,non rusty leafed form. no.4 Might be a Camphor tree. 5 throws me. Might be a Coral tree of some type. In bloom you will know for sure. This is when they start to bloom too.

If the Escallonia is so lax and lanky you think it is a vine, perhaps it needs more light.

4 is camphor, yes. Make sure you have sufficient room for any tree you choose, and don't plant it too close to the house. They all look small when they are planted, but that changes.

Most of these get really large, with a root system to match.

Camphors are messy. They drop branches up 18 inches long twice a year. I had one taken out and it smelled for weeks. That was 4 years ago and its still trying to come up thru the grass.

Thank you so much for all of your help everyone! I love the look of the camphor tree, but it definitely doesn't sound like a realistic option for our front yard. To the folks who said that the "vine" was escallonia, I went to my local nursery to look at it, and it was definitely a match! And yes, to the person who said it might be lanky because it was lacking in light...it was buried under a huge honeysuckle! It's a pretty little plant and when I pulled back the honeysuckle, there it was. I've realized that I'm going to have to slow down a bit. We are blessed that our new house has a big yard. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I want to plant everywhere and to identify all of the things I don't know. But again...its a big yard and its been largely untended so theres a lot to do! I might end up going with the ficus nitidia for the front yard. I just love the look of them and there's a local grower that sells massive ones. I probably wouldn't buy the biggest--those are like 20k! For one tree! But even the step down ones are massive and appear big enough to be climbable within the year. And they have big sales pretty regularly. Oh, and I think tree #5 might be a western redbud! Maybe? I love those! But I think they stay fairly small? They're so pretty, maybe I'll find some other spot for it..

Is that a Redbud? I've seen plenty and they always remind me of Bauhinia leaves. That's what a photo can do sometimes. Make something familiar not familiar!
