Curtains, Sheers, oh my! The windows are different sizes. Please help.

Hi Houzz Community! I would love your help on deciding window treatments for our new home being constructed. Hopefully we will be moving in in 3 short weeks and we will need at least the bedroom windows covered right away.

Where we have been temporarily living is the first place we have lived with thin curtains paired with blackout blinds and we are really enjoying it. It is great seeing the outdoors and having the light with privacy during the day, and then using the blackouts at night for privacy. Prior to this, we had a mix of drapes and mini blinds.

Our new bedrooms have different size windows, and in my bedroom, the windows are even different sizes on the same wall (pics below). I’m not at all sure how to pull that off.

We are debating on getting light filtering honeycomb shades (top down) but want to be able to see outside during the day. If we did this though, we would have to have outside drapes for privacy at night since the hidden, inside blackout drapes would not work.

My top priorities are:

We can see the outside during the day but no one outside can see in
No one outside can see in at night
It’s aesthetically appealing

Do you have any advice? Should we move in and use cheap suspension rod temporary drapes until we have more feel for the space?? I’d rather not, but if that is the best choice, I may have to go with that.

No sheer curtains on those windows, please. Shades, or shutters.

Honeycomb shades will not block light. Around where I live, the sun comes up at 5:30 am and I know it because I wake up with the sun, thanks to no black-out.

You can get a double curtain rod and have inner sheers and heavier curtains an outer layer.

It sounds like top down bottom up honeycomb shades would be a great solution for what you are looking for. They are offered in both light filtering and room darkening fabrics. Those are some good looking windows and I think adding drapes to them would hide the architectural design and flow of the space.

Obvs your bed goes on the wall with the different size windows. Yes you can do sheers on those windows with designer panels at either end.

SHADES! Pick one type of shading. (even shutters!)

This way your design, will be cohesive and uniform.

I agree with the others, try Top/Down bottom up shades!

Curtains that stack entirely on the side or sides during the day? Or a combo with shades like this. This is assuming you're putting the bed below windows though this treatment would work either way. Since the windows are so interesting, the curtains should be pulled to the side.

@Sara - You could do a top down bottom up honeycomb with an opaque or blackout fabric. The shade can fully closed for room darkening, opened from the top for visibility out of the upper portion of the window while still maintaining privacy on the lower portion, or fully open and stacked up.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. We just order light filtering honeycomb shades, bottom-up top-down for 19 windows. Housegal200, thank you for the picture and idea. Once we are moved in I may add curtains that stack entirely on the side.

I'm starting a new conversation next above curtains for a double slider. :)
