I agree that the finish materials are dated. You need a complete bath makeover. Paint the stained wood trim frameless shower door, avoid counter top materials that require grout joints, etc.

The tricky thing with your bathroom is wall space. The window takes up the majority of one wall while the entry door, not shown, puts restrictions on the design.

One thing you might want to consider is making the window smaller. It appears from the photograph that you have wood siding. This should not be difficult to match and the additional wall space gained could make a huge difference.

Designing a bath can be overwhelming so you might want to considering hiring a design professional.

I can't see enough to comment on the floorplan, but I love the slate. I would be inclined to look at demolishing the shower and replacing it with...more slate. Not crazy about the white grout either; would prefer it closer to the color of the stone. Then maybe go a little crazy with the trim:

You do have quite a lovely space to work with there- it will turn out fantastic I'm sure.

My thoughts would be to emplace twin floor to ceiling aluminum clad windows to let the privacy garden "in" at the head of the shower, and have a narrow teak? or glass tile?? "column" between them house your new shower fixtures. You would have the outdoor shower effect without having to rework exterior walls too much and potentially lose that wonderful large window.

I like slate, but life is short, so I like to try wholly different materials/looks as I can. Perhaps some strong wood to tie into the garden space?

Or, move that large window somewhere else in the house, put in a sliding glass door in its' stead, and be close to this stunning layout:
