As it grows, simply bend the vines through and around the support wire. Prune and guide it in the direction that you wish it to climb. Good luck!

You should also know that most vining honeysuckles will easily exceed the height of that fence. so be prepared for it to latch on to something else close by or cascade over to the other side of the fence as well.

Ptreckel - do I only guide the new growth into the fence or do I release it from the stake and guide what’s there through as well? And can I gently tie to the wire and let it climb on its own or does it not climb that way?

Gardenga - I've read that I can keep it trimmed down to the height I’d like it. Is that not so simple to do?

I’m ok with it cascading over the other side. Since it doesn’t cling like ivy or tangle like clematis, will it be easier to keep it from getting into the arborvitae?

Oh, it will vine very willingly into the arborvitaes. And there is only so much trimming you can do during the growing season and still have it flower well. Once established, even if hard pruned it can regain full height (10-12' or more) in a single season.

Do you have an arbor on to which it could be trained? Or...might this be an excuse to build one??? You can start the vines to grow upward by loosely tying them with string to your wire frame. I’d trim back the ones that want to grow along the ground. They do smell divine, no??? But be prepared to nip away, strategically, at the plant. They grow fast!

I think a cedar one to coordinate with your fence would look awesome. You will have plenty of vine to twine on your arbor if you wait until next year!!! Just keep monitoring your vine and keep it in good health...and next year you will have a fabulous feature! Gardening is always about waiting until next year! Anticipation....
