Help needed with rug and chandelier. Any ideas?

last modified: 6 years ago

I'm happy with the way my existing vintage furniture fits in our 1950s rambler, but two years after moving in am still struggling to find a 9 x 12 foot rug for my living room. It is hard to get a well lit photo, but the colors in the closeup of the chair and sofa fabrics with the white oak floor aren't too far off.

I'd also like to replace the funky light over my 38" x 78" dining room table with something a little more classic. It can't be too large since the room is 10' X 13', with an eight foot ceiling. We have both brushed silver and brass in the space, so I think either could work.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I got a notification on a comment that seems to have disappeared. Did you get a nice surprise, julia?

Yes, stryker, the rug is here! I think it will look good once it unrolls a little. Right now I'm trying to get it to relax and smooth out, and then will have to trim the pad and put the room back together. I've got a busy day, but should have something to show you by evening.

Ooh I love the blue rugs you’re recommending Grover! Where are you finding them?

Ta da! It is a really gray, rainy day, so I can't get a photo that begins to show the true color, which is aqua, but I'm happy. It kind of grounds the room without shouting "look at me!"

My favourite type of rug is one that “grounds the room without shouting "look at me!"”.

    well done!

Oh, yay! I am so happy for you, Julia! I love it in there... it's just right. And, your pics look way better than the mockups! Does your guy love it too? :)

Thanks, it is a relief that the size is right and we both like it. The color and texture do go well with our stuff, and the design is unusual enough to be interesting. Credit to you for finding it, rred!

I haven't ordered the chandelier yet since I'm going to get it online, and don't want it to arrive while I'm on vacation next week. I would have bought it from a local store, but they gave me a 2-4 week delivery time at a higher price.

I love the rug. It compliments your room perfectly.

Though it was promised for Monday, my chandelier hasn't arrived, and I have ten people coming over this evening. Maybe they won't notice...

    :)))))) nice sculpture!

    Candle light on the table?

Apparently not everything is computerized these days, since when I called the lighting company today to see when my chandelier is coming, I was told they forgot to ship it! They are now going to send it express, whatever that means.

OMG! What service; maybe the glitch? Great on the way!

Julia, you made me laugh out loud. Did any of your ten guests notice? Or were they too polite to say anything?

Will they give you a discount for the delay? Mr manages to get compensation for screwups all the time.

Love the Grov 3 rd rug - where can I see it in Montreal Quebec

Anna, I don't don't know about Montreal, but it is called Crescent Rug from Metropolitan by American Rug Craftsmen. Grover found it at PlushRugs.com.

We were outside on Wednesday so though it was a laugh, the lack of light didn't matter. I'm having some neighbors who have never been here before for dinner tonight, though, and since the forecast is poor, it very well be a dark and stormy night in the dining room. Candles it is!

Gorgeous with all caps! Just use your imagination! Love it!

The chandelier is up! I'm going to try some of the suggested torpedo shaped bulbs to compare, but overall am pleased.

Can you share the chandelier info? I’ve been looking for something similar.

akcathy, here is a link. It is available lots of places, comes in brass & polished nickel, and in two sizes. I got the 24" version.

Julia where did you get the console/buffet cabinet in the dining room? Was it custom made?

Kim, the console came with the house, and was custom made. Considering the shelves are only 8" deep, it is surprisingly useful.

Perfectly understated and elegant lighting. Compliments the modern vibe of the home and looks like it was meant for the space. Well done!

How's it look w the wallpaper? Can we have a "that side" view? ;)

    juliab51 thanked rredpenn

And your crisp white trimwork makes me want to tackle this mess here at home... LOL

Kim, my in-laws had a similar console in their dining room. They used upper kitchen cabinets, and topped it with wood. That would be deeper than Julia’s, but it is a nice look.

Here it is with the wallpaper and new bulbs, which echo the ones over the kitchen bar which is similar to the console. I know the chandelier isn't a showstopper, but do like the way everything relates to each other, and am thrilled to just have the house done.

Thank you, rred, for all the help and suggestions!

Looks perfect to me! Love your place... hope to see it for reals someday. :)

That would be fun. Any plans to come up for a concert???

Kim, Ladma ‘s suggestin of using upper kitchen cabinets reminded me that is exactly what my neighbors did to create extra storage. So check out using upper cabinets. They were 10 inches wide.

The room looks wonderful Julia! I am happy for you :)
