That looks like a pongam tree. Also called bani flower tree. Seeds are poisonous.

I don't think so, DG. These used to be everywhere in Miami as street trees, although I never knew their name. The flowers never open up like the pongam. They stay just like they look on the ground, only with a very small trumpet-shaped opening at the end at the height of their bloom. Very sweet scent, though. There used to be a lot of them around the municipal parking garage near the college downtown. The flowers are not very noticeable unless you're looking around for the source of the scent.

The first link shows unopened flowers. Of course, they have to open to be pollinated, but maybe they open at night? I've noticed that some leguminous trees do have flowers that don't appear to open. The weed i found in a pot is clearly a legume, and it's setting seeds, but I've never seen the flowers open. I think they open at night, becuase they only last a day, then there is a seed pod. It's under two botanical names, Milletia and Pongamia.

I don't see why any city would plant them, but then, Selby Gardens brought in Brazilian Holly as an ornamental, and others brought in Indian Rosewood, popcorn tree, Australian Pines and Malaleuca, so who knows?

Yeah, I guess I wasn't very clear. When opened they look like a teeeeny trumpet, like an easter lily shape, but with only one or two petals just slightly open. They don't open wide.

I have never seen the flowers open. They drop like rain. If I am standing under its shade a gentle breeze would cause half a dozen of these flowers to hit my head. Right now there are so many flowers the ground is white looks like snow covered ground. The flowers rot fast walking over them I can feel my feet sinking into an inch of this mushy flower carpet.
