Best composite deck material, not too hot.

We are replacing our wood deck and I'd like to go with a composite for the low maintenance and longevity; however, I know they can become outrageously hot. Our pool is in direct sun until at 4pm. Also concerned about how slippery they become when wet pool feet step on them.

They do get hot. We installed one a few years ago. You need to be careful dragging chairs and other heavy items because you can crush the ridges used to give the impression of wood.

We chose composite because we had a pressure treated deck from the previous owner that had not been maintained. I was sick of the popping nails, the splinters and did not want anything turning gray. And I knew we wouldn't be staining on a regular basis.

I love it because I can walk out there barefoot without a worry and it always looks good and I don't have to stain or treat it at all. If it's hot then I wear my gardening shoes.

Decide what is important to you and go from there. That will usually make the decision for you.

I have been looking at materials and I am learning that they all get hot. I think I am just going to add an outdoor rug. Everyone I have talked to says go with a lighter color too. what composite are you looking at? I'm leaning towards Azek but would consider others if I could find people who have experience with composite.

My thoughts exactly, Darcie: a light color will reflect the light/heat. No idea about slippage though. What advice did manufacturer have?

azek has a great 30 year warranty but it is $$$. I can't find any negative comments about it either.

I know you say you want composite, but if your reasons are low maintenance and longevity, and your one concern is heat, then a hardwood like ipe or cumaru might be perfect for you.

They are just as low-maintenance as composites if you don't mind them turning gray, they have proven lifespans of 50-75 years, and they stay cool in the sun. As a bonus, they offer a little bit of slip-resistance thanks to their natural dense grain.

As far as cost, these hardwoods can be about as expensive as composites, or a little cheaper.
