Yes - but a lot depends on your style. My first thought is to sheet rock the closet down at the top to normal size and then get what you want. I put solid mahogany doors with crystal knobs in my house with white wood work trim. If this is a bedroom you can also get with a company like the Closet Factory and they can make doors with mirrors on the front that fold out so you can see yourself in a three way mirror which is what I did in my dressing room. Also what is the things in the middle? Do the closets join? Also the Closet Factory came in and put organizers in all of my closets and pantry - best money ever spent. I am now so into organization!

Thanks for your thoughts, the middle is brick and I currently have an ottoman in the middle for storage. The closets do not join, they are separate.. I had thought about making them standard size, just seems like such a waste to lose just foot and a half of storage. I want to do something for storage inside so really appreciate your thoughts on that too!

You don’t actually loose the storage at all. I’ll take picture in the morning of my dressing room which I think will help you. I have a rabid believe that cheap doors and cheap trim make any living space look cheap versus solid/custom. And by adding those features you can make the space feel extravagant. For instance, the mahogany doors were only slightly more expensive than other basic choices but the look makes the space. I think you can add top cabinets as an alternative and make it look right. But you never ansered the question, what is your style??

Is the brick structural or just “decorative”? Could it be removed?
Yes, you must get rid of the cheap metal doors. Your new doors may repeat the style of other doors in the room for continuity. And I would paint them to match the trim.

I would also replace the off-center light sconces on the ceiling.

Thanks all, I appreciate your suggestions! i had planned on building out the header of the closet to accommodate for the rail for barn doors. I’m not keen on full swing out doors as they will come so far into the space. The brick can’t be removed and I actually think it’s a nice element . I have something similar in our condo bedroom. I had the header enlarged and then custom sliding louvered (air flow important in Florida!) doors. Looks really good, no extra room space needed.

I wouldn’t give up the easy accessibility of storage at the top of the closet. If you really want to put shorter doors in you could put shorter doors above the regular closet doors for access. This is my work in progress.
