large flowered clematis. The path through the gate could be a lot nicer if paved.

Yep, there is a clematis for every situation...but I would be more inclined to go with the easier viticellas. You will need 2 (one each side - no flowering vines will bloom well on downward facing stems). The integrifolia family are also good contenders. Alternately, the climbing rose Lilian Gibson is well worth searching out - a floriferous, healthy and well-behaved rose for your zone.

Finally, if you are easily bored, there are a number of excellent annuals which are easily grown from a direct sowing, will happily cover the trellis and adjoining fencing and can be changed out every year. I do this A LOT and here are some of my usual picks.

For large areas:walls, garages, sheds etc.

cobaens scandens, aka cathedral bells or cup and saucer plant. Amazingly, there is time to sow this for a show this late summer.

Morning glory - although ipomea nil, Heavenly Blue is more temperamental than i.tricolour Granpa Otts or Kniola's Black

for arches and trellis:

I'm more inclined to choose a perennial. I love Lillian Gibson wow, but it looks much too large for this space. May try to find a clematis, viticella
