Tall friends, help us with our hood!

The hub is a 6’2 and up until this kitchen we have always had micro hoods. We are getting a real chimney hood in this kitchen, and he’s afraid it’s going to be right in his face because we have 8 foot ceilings. If we put it 36 inches above the range top, it will be as tall as him, but that is the max distance from the range top, so I would prefer a few inches lower. But at 5’2” I don’t have the same issue. Can anyone help us figure out if this is even an issue?
Picture just for example of an 8 foot ceiling, not my kitchen.

My husband is 6’5” and yes he does cook and he doesn’t have any issues. We have a very similar hood. It’s not like you stand under it, especially a slim line one like that.

Thanks Karen! Glad to hear it’s not an issue!

Vin, thanks so much for the pic, that will make him feel better!!

36" sounds like you'd be compromising the draw of the hood.

any chance of visiting some kitchen showrooms and sidling up next to their ranges? :)

I am 6'3" and have no issues with lower hoods. But like @acm is saying, make sure to read the specifications and installation instructions of your hood carefully. Many are meant to be installed around 24" above the cooking surface to effectively exhaust grease laden vapors.

    Depth is also important.

Only time it might become an issues is when cleaning the hood, as he reaches in for the back corners he needs to make sure he ducks a bit so as not to hit the edge. Most likely he isn't the one doing the deep cleaning of the hood/range so probably not an issue at all!

The higher the hood entry aperture, the larger the aperture has to be to encompass the rising and expanding cooking plumes. As the hood grows, so too does the required flow rate of the hood and the corresponding flow rate of the make-up air. So long as all of these are feasible and affordable, 36 inches or even higher can be used without loosing effectiveness. (Commercial hoods are generally 7 ft above the floor which is 4 ft above the cooking appliance.) In deciding hood size for high hoods, care must be taken that effects of cross drafts are accounted for, particularly in island and peninsula configurations.

For evaluating head contact, side view drawings of the configuration with stick figure cooks that can bend at the waist will reveal any problems.

LOL.... NON issue...not nob. My clients husband relishes their GE Monogram Range and chimney hood. He's 6'4"

Ha! Jan, I was thinking if I got different knobs it wouldn’t be an issue...lol!Thanks for the input, just a new chapter for us, so the hub needs to check out friend’s kitchens :)

Ok, so I'm going to present a different viewpoint. My husband is 6'3" and we have a GE Monogram hood, installed as per the manufacturer's recommendations, which is 30" max above the counter. This means it is 66" (5' 6") above the floor, which he HATES, as it is much lower than his eye level. He hits his head on it a lot if he tries to cook. But it is a non-issue as he doesn't cook much beyond scrambled eggs :)

Diana, do you think a slim design(22 inch depth) would help? My hub doesn’t cook a lot during the week, but we do enjoy cooking together on the weekends m.

Well the one I have (ZV950SDSS) is 25" deep, so perhaps 3" less depth would solve the problem. But I couldn't say for sure--maybe you could find a showroom that has one on display.

Look. If you suffered a lifetime with a microwave over an ordinary range? Nobody past a midgets height would have a HEAD. Many millions of men are over six feet tall, and many women are nearly that. A micro over a range is 18 to 20 above the cook. It's not an issue.............you don't lean in over a back burner unless you're nuts. You stand at least eight inches from a stove or cook when you're doing that cooking thing: ) Relax.

The only time to watch your head? When cleaning a WALL NEXT to the range.Either side, or the splash behind the range.
