Quilt Blocks galore

Hi all, There’s no real reason for this post, just a little rant to say hello....

I mentioned a while ago that I joined a modern quilt guild and then I volunteered to sit on the board and then we got a puppy, and I then signed up for this and that.....stop me already. I’m not complaining, but I’ve over committed my LAZY retired butt. We have our health, although having a puppy has tried my mental health, :/|. I bring all this up to explain that the two sawtooth improv blocks made for a this month’s bee queen, happily represent my modern retired chaos.

If this wasn’t enough, I also signed up for the summer sampler 2019 and the 100days100blocks by gnome angel, aka kinship. There’s other, non-sewing, stuff going on as well, but this whole sewing / quilting thing is a fun crazy addiction....the more I learn , the more I want to try.

After reading Sharon’s busy post, and Theresa’s health challenges ( you are in my prayers), orchestra schedules, along with others life events, etc. I realize I’m a light weight in the important busy life stuff.....but....Does anyone else feel like quilting is a crazy addiction at times? When do you say no?

Those are very cute blocks, Valarie! And yes, it's a crazy addiction! When I made my Monterrey Medallion top, there were a bunch of stars where you sew a square and a rectangle on the diagonal then cut the corner off. Well, I'm not going to waste all those perfectly good triangles! I sewed them in to HSTs, then sewed those into little 4 patch chevrons. What am I going to do with them? Who knows?! But at least they aren't in the trash.

So, yes, it's a crazy addiction. :) It's also how so many of us end up with 12-15-30-100 WIPs.

It may be an addiction but in many cases, it keeps us sane( or as sane as can be).

In between hospital visits, answering a hundred phone calls and emails, I have been cutting some squares to use as alternate blocks on a string quilt. And I have been fighting my rotary cutter. It seems I just replaced that blade so I am resisting changing again. This morning, I had had enough so got out the new blade package and dismantled the cutter. Tried to pop off the used blade and what should happen but one came off and one remained. All this time, I have been trying to cut with two blades. Head smack, head smack! Now it cuts like butter. What can I say!

Love the blocks, Val. And as busy and hectic as retirement can be, it is so much nicer than work.

Donna, the WIPs and UFOs do seem to accumulate, don't they.

Theresa, we have all done the 2 blade thing.

I have to say, I don't spend alot of time with my scraps. If the scrap isn't at least 2 in. square, its gone! I admire anyone who can use up those pieces, tho! Valarie, your blocks are beautiful!

I love the wonky blocks, Val! Yes, your schedule sounds a bit like mine. TWO quilt guilds, why did I think I could manage two quilt guilds? I’ve made three baby quilts for charity or silent auction, one larger quilt for our charity, and a table runner in the past few months. It is a case of “this quilt is for Guild A and this other quilt is for Guild B.....” - as in keeping my work evenly divided. And I’ve been working on a new flower bed in my front yard - the bugs have been working on me. Very bad year for bugs here with all the rain we have had.

V., yes it's a crazy addiction - but - all those years you worked and worked and wished you could do something that you loved but really didn't have much time for are OVER! YOU ARE RETIRED!!! LIVE! AND DO AND LOVE WHAT YOU WISHED FOR ALL THOSE YEARS!! YOU DESERVE EVERY DROP OF IT!!!

OK, done with the all-caps now.

And when do you say no? When you've been tricked into taking on more than you can handle, so be careful not to get burned out too soon and ruin your joy, this is a hobby, not a job. This is the main reason why I've never joined a guild because I don't like being told what to do. But then I've never been a good joiner and team player anyways, so there.

Ritaweeda: so right, it’s not a job, it our fun Hobby!

Char: I don’t save tiny scraps, just grab what’s there, sew, & trim to the block size needed. Many times it creates more scraps, but they go to the trash heap!

Teresa: cortisone works great on those bugs....I used up a small tube this year!

Beautiful blocks! Of course, I do love scrappy. I made a few crazy blocks a while back, but never thought what to do with them. I think I'll try finishing them into this block. Thanks.
