If your priority is adding two chairs for elderly parents, then choose new chairs with arms. It's much easier to get out of them. Avoid chairs that flex such as the Ikea Poang chair, it's hard to get out of.

is your current budget range Craigslist, Ikea, Macy's, Crate and Barrel or other?

Would new foam in the cushions of the red chair make it more comfortable? If so, invest in that even though it seems expensive.

I don't think new foam would help the red one. We can do Crate and Barrel price range, not thrilled about it, but willing to do so. We went to West Elm yesterday and found a couple that seemed okay. There isn't a Crate and Barrel in the city we live in. I've been also looking at Joybird (reading about quality issues) and then dreaming about chairs from Room and Board. I don't mind paying Room and Board prices, since we keep things for a very long time, but I worry about our kids wrecking havoc on an expensive piece of furniture. We do want something so that our folks are comfortable when visiting but also something that we like.

None of the chairs you show above are very MCM-ish. The red chair is, as are West Elm's show wood chairs. West Elm's Spencer was a fave of my very tall friend who found of their other recliners too small.

Any chance of moving the TV to the wall where the sofa is now? it looks like it occludes the window in its current spot.

How about a couple of beanbags for the kids?

You might shop second hand; I just found 3 Polo floor pillows that are entirely washable for $12.99 each. If your area has a more upscale neighborhood, you can find some great buys on better quality items at those yard sales. Estate sales where older folks have passed can be great sources of authentic MCM pieces too.

Have 7 yr old twin grand boys...they destroy everything, which amazes me as I had an only daughter who was content to read, lol! She now has 4 kids total, and we go cheap and comfy until they are all older. Unless you have a "banish the kids" space, would not yet invest in CB or RB furniture. I got $400 chairs at Macy's that were a knock off of CB at $1800 each. And here's the thing, even CB is not high enough quality to recover in 5-8 years given the labor/fabric cost of recover. So find a comfy chair that looks good now, will be dead in 5-6 years and is inexpensive. Cause twins can eat foam out of ANY chair!

IMO kids need to learn some respect for your space and I had 3 boys with expensive furniture which was in my LR and if they wanted to play in there there were rules. In fact that furniture is now 40 yrs old and in my youngest son’s rec roomstill looks great with new stuffing for the cushions. As for what you need get chairs you find comfy in a simple style I love the red chair and I agree the TV is in an awkward place with a new Besta system it could go on the sofa wall give you lots of storage some display up high and the TV. It would allow all the kids stuff to be put away for adult entertaining. Our kids loved floor cushions and I would get them stack them in a corner when not being used.If you post a floor plan with details it might make it easier to figure out size of furniture pieces.

Grover, your mock ups are wonderful, as usual, and thank you for taking the time. Feel free to add 4 legged furry friends! I don't think we can switch the TV/Couch. If we put the couch on the opposite side of the wall, the length would go over the window...not sure that makes sense. In it's current spot there is about 3 ft gap between couch and window. There is a small bookshelf in between with kids books.

I like how you put the two chairs, table in between, and bean bags. We had not thought of bean bags. I would be open to your ideas for any other chairs.

We are not sold on MCM type...just tends to be what we gravitate towards and very open to other suggestions. Nice to hear about the spencer, I'm 6'3" and 1 grandparent is 6'4". I''m not sure how well it would look in the living room. Thoughts?

Anyother ideas for chairs? I'll take a look at Macy's; great idea. I agree about quality and longevity of CB. I have such a hard time stomaching spending so much with little kids.

Thank you for the comment and contributing to the thread; I always appreciate your insight on Houzz (as well as others). Before the twins, I was checking out the Besta....then the twins came and decorating was the furthest thing from our mind.

I'll work on a floor plan with measurements, so the lay out is better understood.

My 4 year old could do this better. Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll brush up on my layout drawing skills. I was trying to rotate the pic but couldn't figure out how to do it in Houzz.

So, came across this chair and color and kinda like it, not the price at $999. What do you think about 2 of these, like in gover's mock up? I was surprised to see this priced so high from CB2 but then again I haven't looked there in ages. Might look nice with a brown Spencer from West Elm.

One last question. There would be about a 3 ft gap behind the chairs. That seems like it would be "dead space". Any issues with that? I figured we could add a nice wooden storage box for toys until we get the media center sorted out.

That bay window might be a great place for a window seat with storage, or just a storage bench and a place for the kids to play.

Again, I love mine. I have twins as well (mine are 30 now!) but this sofa has been around since they were teenagers and has survived very well. Good luck with your project!
